5.5 has a number of bugs. For instance, it doesn't read the CSS background-color property. I found this out the hard way when a client opened a site I built for him in it and saw a white background. There's other issues with it also.

That you rely on the ad for revenue tells me the setup is not going to change, since that ad is more important that the sensitivity of your viewers. That seems shortsighted to me since if you lose the viewers (and your advertisers will know if you do) then your ads will go away.
It is not merely that the ads are too wide and overly compress the forum. That itself is a problem that diminishes the value of the forum, mind you. It's bad enough on my 1024 x 768 display, and I shudder to think what it would look like a the 800 x 600 still used by so many.
The worse problem is that the ads are different widths and that the forum keeps changing widths unpredictably. I find this jarring and unpleasant and I know that I will be leaving. That's not a threat. I will leave reluctantly and gradually over time, because the annoyance of that visual effect will get to me. It has happened on other forums.
The ads can be configured so that they are narrow and all the same width. If you don't do that, you are going to lose some present and many future members. That may or may not concern you, but it should concern your advertisers.
Can some sort of wrap effect be used so that the post width at the level of the ad is narrow but below the ad it is at screen width?
OMG....I too have experienced the excruciating pain in my index finger as I turned the scroll wheel on my poor mouse not once , but ONE AND A HALF TIMES to get down to the posts! Just think of the calories I burned in doing so! I was forced to eat 3 Power Bars and drink a quart of Gatorade every time I visited VDR and had to *shudder* scroll down slightly to get to the posts!Quote:

Makes the site look ridiculous to be quite honest. A complete waste of space (and I'm not proposing to fill it all up with advertising). There has got to be a better solution. Put the ad back on the top or on the bottom...as Nix said, we all get there eventually anyway when reading the posts.
One example: The forums at Wincustomize. Yes, there is a narrow gap on the left side, but look what they put in there....useful menus. And there is still room for two ads at the top. Even with that gap I find this site to be easier on the eye than what VDR is now. I suppose it is because with the gap on the left, it mentally appears more like just an indentation. With a big gap on the right, it leaves one with the feeling that everything has been "cut off". (I know I may not be making much sense here...but hey....it's Bistro, OK?)
Dear Virtual Doctor team,
Congratulations for the new look and for upgrading to vBulletin 3! :) I'm sure everyone will appreciate the effort made in testing and implementing all changes, once they get used to them.
The only thing I'd like to point out is that the horizontal bar on top of each post, containing the username, avatar, title, location, join date and number of posts, is adding up to the page height making scrolling annoying. Also, since the posts now stretch from one window margin to the other, sentences are reheheheheeeaaaally long and difficult to follow when jumping from the end of one row to the beginning of the next, on high resolution monitors (like mine). Please take into consideration making the user info a column at the left of the post, to both shorten the page and slightly decrease the width of the sentences.
All the best wishes,
- puterfixer
Using IE 6.0 sometimes my columns are too narrow, but sometimes they're not! When they ARE, if I hit my refresh button a couple of times, it seems to correct itself. I'll be testing same issues on FireFox next couple of days.
Where is a list of icon descriptions for the new default icons? I can't seem to make heads or tails of them. (Whether they contain new messages, have been replied to, etc.)
Overall, I don't MIND the new interface, but don't really find anything beneficial to it either... just my 2ยข worth...
They're at the bottom of the forum pages, and thread lists.
Had not noticed them, thanks very much!
I DO have an ad-blocker running from a Dogpile toolbar in IE 6.0, would that account for my "right of column" whitespace changing from time to time?
It was my understanding that the complaints made about the advertisements being on top were for the main page only, www.virtualdr.com. I thought suggestions were made that on the main page, the ads should not fill 2/3 of the screen because it is unattractive to new users, and makes the web site "misunderstood", ie no one knows what this website is about. Did anyone complain about the advertisements in the posts area? I shouldn't think that would bother anyone. As Bistro put it, "Good grief". But maybe I misunderstood the whole issue of the advertisements on V2.
This situation is simply unbearable. I can't stand the new look of the boards with the big white space right there on the right of my screen. Why not use some common sense and at least do what Leurgy suggested (which is a fine compromise in my opinion) where the first post next to the advertisement is shortened, and the rest of the posts, underneath the ad, will fill the whole screen.
By the way, this lousy format makes it a nightmare to read HijackThis logs. Have a look at this:

Each HJT line spreads out over two lines in the forum. Sorry, this whole thing makes me mad.
I don't have the problem at all with FireFox 1.0.1. My posts stretch all the way across the screen...
Shiva, I just used the Adblock extension for FF to get rid of the advertisement and it works great. You may be doing the same thing.
I am no longer mad :D
...effectively doubling the size of the post. With some HJT logs, one post could end up taking a whole page. Not good. :( I help with HJT logs on another forum and I would find that irritating.Quote:
