Well in case you haven't tried it yet, one program I now can't be without is the Mozilla FireFox browser. Talk about lightning fast - WOW, and the download time is next to none.

Try it, you'll like it..........

These are useful ways to controll your startup list instead of mscomfig.
the first one lets you access and turn on or off programs etc..
The second will alert you if something trys to apply itself on your pc.

Well I just looked at StartupMechanic...
It falsely identified TweakUI as the "Subwoofer Virus", ctfmon.exe as part of the "CoolWebSearch Parasite" and five other legitimate startup applications as being the "Cuydoc virus"!

My favourite msconfig alternative is Mike Lin's Startup ControlPanel from www.mlin.net

I am looking for a program to manage my favorites file in IE. Over the last couple of years, this file has gotten very long.

I would like to be able to validate all links and I would like to know if I have any duplicate links in different folders. In addition to see my folders in alpha order, I would like to be able to see an expanded version, where I could see all sub-folders and all of the links in each folder.

There has to be a better way to manage this process than what is currently available in IE.

All ideas and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I recently went through the process of trying out about a dozen or so freeware bookmark managers and settled on netvisualize as the best (of the ones evaluated) for my needs. I did not look into shareware.

Also, supplemental to netvisualize, I have been toying with the FURL bookmark manager, which is a free "online" manager, but it provides either a toolbar or you can set up a link in the links toolbar and consequently saving and access to the bookmarks is more readily available. It seems pretty handy so far and is a good backup measure. But, three concerns: 1) what happens if the service goes away (not likely according to them...), 2) I also noticed in my firewall log that it was "phoning home" on startup but I guess that would be expected, and 3) to be usable, should have a broadband connection for quick response...

My boss is always complaining - you computer users are cost centres for printer catridge and paper- well to do the lot of drafts, I use Fine Print 2000; you bet, it saves paper and ink particularly as I set my printer on draft. If you my problem too, try it.

I would very much like to get this program which was suggested by Ahmed. I downloaded it and got an icon on my desktop (Splitl40.zip). But when I clicked it, I got a message

It sounds like you don't have a unzip program (like ultimate unzip) to unzip the file. The movie player was your default program that was trying to open that folder on your desktop and when it is not supported it will give you an error such as the one you got. If you do not have a program that can unzip files. Then go to ultimatezip.com ( i think that is it, if not do a search for for it) and download that program and then you will be able to unzip the files to load that program splitter that your talking about. After you get a unzip program on your computer you will be able to unzip all files that are compressed. Just hit extract all zip files select the one you want to unzip and run it. I hope this helps you.

I am the project manager for a development project for a non-profit and there are about 15 people on the team. We are all donating our services.

I am looking for a freeware program that would track & prioritize bugs, problems, and issues. It would be nice if it was one program, which had sub-categories for each application.

Hi Linda; You've probably solved this problem already, but I thought I'ld pass this little tip along to anyone else who's interested.

As you've discovered, the bookmark organizer built in to IE is terrible. However, the nice thing about how IE stores its bookmarks, as ordinary file names, makes it easy to manage them in Windows Explorer. Just go to C:\Windows\Profiles\Your_profile_name\Favorites, (assuming you use a profile), and copy, move, rename, whatever, all your bookmarks with ease.

This, of course, won't validate URL's, but for everthing else, it beats the pants off of whats built in to IE.

There's one other side benefit in doing it this way. You can easily copy your favorites to a floppy, for either backup purposes, or to transport them to another computer. You can even edit, and organize them while at another computer, then import them back to the original, with a simple copy, or move command.

For instance, to organize your "work" favorites, while at home, or vice-versa. ;)

The main reason I think it's better than avg is I was using avg pro ver7 and installed avast ,which found 3 viruses residing on my pc that avg did not know or detect were there.

Also avast has a good support forum. to name a couple ,I think the scan engine does a better job and resident protection can be run as a screen saver in addition to being on in the background all the time.
Also screensaver can be used to update the VRD, virus recovery database. all in all I really like Avast home edition which is free, and they meet virus bulletins 100% detection test.
updates are fast and usually new updates occur 2 or more times a week.
I could go on but you can try it and tell me?

I noticed that no one had responded, so thought I would kick in my 2 cents, or non-sense....

First, if you haven't already, you might want to pose this question under another category, and maybe on other forums also to get max feedback, since this is a somewhat special subject.

Secondly, there are some freeware packages that might meet your requirements, but before that, I should mention that I think that I recently ran across some open source freeware that was supposedly the equivalent of "Project". You could probably search on some freeware sites and find it.

If something like Project is too heavy duty, I was wondering if something like "LM 2000" might work. If LM2000 seems too abstract, or too involved as it might well be, you might want to look at something simpler like TreeDBNotes, or even just hierarchical "notepad" organizers like KeyNote or TreePad Lite (there is a bunch of those out there...)... Of this latter category, TreeDBNotes might be the best -- it may seem perplexing when you first fire it up, but it is actually quite straightforward to use once you see what it can do and then you can make it as complex as you need it to be... Good Luck...

If you need links, let me know -- I thought that these days most folks can easily search for what they want to check out...

Actually, I have already tried out AVAST, along with most of the other better freeware AV packages, and even a paid-for AV (what was Norton AV before Symantec got ahold of it...)

I actually thought that AVAST was the better AV, but was concerned when I realized that three fairly large and resource intensive AVAST modules were concurrently running resident (which to me seemed like maybe a good thing...), and that led me to post my concerns. Long story short, a vast (pun intended) majority of respondents indicated that I would be better off with AVG and I reluctantly (suspiciously even...) switched away from AVAST. But that is a subject for another thread, and of course has already BEEN highly conversed all over the map, I was just curious what your reasoning was...

Well, this thread was already in the book of records for it's length, and now I wonder if it is approaching any records for straying from the original subject matter... :D

Well, this thread has been going for over a year since the first post on Feb. 28, 2002.

I'm glad to see it's turned out way better than I first expected it would. I hope it's helped out a lot of people and perhaps made your continous search for that free program that makes your life just a little easier.

And since keywester had mentioned about the thread getting off topic I thought I'd post another little program that I use often.

Since I'm restricted to 56k dial-up where I'm at right now I frequently have problems when downloading large files since my connection may be lost from time to time.

I often use a little program called Download Accelerator Plus which you can download here. The free version has some banner ads, or you can purchase the non-ad version.

Not only can it resume your download, but it will get the download from several different locations and speed it up as much as possible. You can even pause the download and quere other downloads to start once one is done.

Thanks aimeric, I hadn't heard about any spyware in DAP. I've got version 5.3 and my spyware killer program never reported anything. They are up to version 7 now, so I'll give DownloadExpress a try.

Up-to-date performance test results for free antivirus programs aren't always easy to come by, but the little information I've been able to dredge up indicates that most of these utilities are improving. I tried all four of the programs below--the only free Windows antivirus programs I could find--and though I found Grisoft's AVG and Alwil's Avast 4 to be the most feature-rich, I feel comfortable recommending any of the four. They all update their virus definitions automatically and have a seal of approval from at least one testing lab.

Grisoft's AVG Anti-Virus System: AVG passed Virus Bulletin's June 2003 VB100 Windows XP test (the most recent available at press time) after failing previous attempts; it also passed ICSA's June 2003 test. It's nice to see someone agrees :) I do like avast home and am considering the pro version based on the pro versions ability to block scripts, but there isn't really allot of differences between pro & home better user interface on pro, script blocking. But I am impressed enough with AVAST to supprot them in the future , Hopefully when gas prices come down ? Thanx for your useful input keywester .

Hey keywester I hope you don't think I am sidetracking this great post I thought that recommending good programs was the reason for the ORIGINAL thread posted by Webshark2000 in the first place, If i have steered off course my apologizes. Also there may have been a few programs I have suggested in the past that were not all that great, but the learning curve is improving with all the GREAT help provided via VIRTUAL Dr. ;)

There's a program I found out about a long time ago called Mp3 info extension that enables you to tag your mp3s. No big deal, lots of programs do it right?

Well so far, I found nothing that does it like this little baby. You right click on any mp3 and a tab is there...many options, too mnay to list. You can also do a group of files...a whole folder, a whole DRIVE if u want to.

Well, after debating what is meant by "little program", I have narrowed it down to one that's downloaded and one software disk. I truly could not live without Paint Shop Pro 6. The other program I couldn't do without is my firewall (ZoneAlarm).

This is a double post, as I also put this into "great freeware utilities", but thought that it was worthwhile enough to do that, as not everyone will look at both...so, if the moderator wants to eliminate one, it is your choice which one to eradicate...

I did a search and did not see it here (surprisingly?), so thought I should post a great little prog that lurks in the background and alerts you of any potentially nefarious activity (hopefully it doesn't do any nefarious activity on it's own...).

It's kind of like a firewall in that you can set trusted apps, etc., but it does a whole lot more, monitoring registry changes and so on...

Might be for the paranoid, or for when you have a new system and it is not yet locked down, or for those that maintain a lot of financial or personal info...

Anyway, it's free and a very well thought out component...

With all I have to monitor here and with being out and about some days 17+ hours. I have little time to babysit servers. This little app with check a server in a variety of ways and if your server has crashed, it will send a TXT message to your Cell Phone telling you information you have predefined with in the program.

I have this watching over 42 systems and it's NEVER failed me. Sometimes I know before the client knows !
