why are you using a static IP? aren't you going to use DHCP like last time?Quote:
i changed tcp/ip properties ip address to:
10.1.10.200
255.255.255.0
10.1.10.1
(the host 7 has 10.1.10.116 ... etc)
Did you take notes of what actually worked last time? We went through a lot of options, and I would rather not go through it all again.
mixed "success".
managed to install the lpt1 printer and can print a test page.
can print from notepad but i get a few lines of control characters before the actual file contents.
cannot print from qbasic.
just did that temporarily to see if that would work. that was before i saw the nat vs broadcom setting in xp tools.
Trying to backtrack last time.
1. you installed a local printer with the tcpip port going to the shared printer on the Host.
2. you shared that printer on the VM
3. you created another local printer to LPT1
4. use the net use command to point LPT1 to the shared printer on the VM
Definitely take notes of what worked this time. No sense in reinventing the wheel.
will do.
i guess i was thinking since the 7 machine is connected to the dot matrix printer via a parallel cable (not usb), then we wouldn't have to jump through the hoops we did previously.

i started #1 and realized i'm confused.
if i follow the same procedure as we did before, we'll end up with all the output going to the laserjet installed on windows 7 here, correct?
this is not what i want here. this second pc is not set up identical to the first one. this one does have a parallel printer attached to it. word 2013 prints to it just fine. what i want it for the vmxp to print to the dot matrix parallel port printer also.
sorry, but it's been a long week and this 66-year-old brain is partially fried :(
i'll have to come back to this tomorrow.
Basically, you are substituting the dotmat for the laserjet this time. You would need to create a new shared printer on the host with the dotmat. usb or parallel doesn't matter. You're still connecting to a shared printer on the host from the xpvm.
ok, let me see if i get this right. sorry if i'm going ste-by-step:
1. you installed a local printer with the tcpip port going to the shared printer on the Host.
the dotmat on the host is already shared as "DotMatrix"
i install the dotmatrix printer on vmxp. named it XPDotMatrix1 and reassign it to the ts001 port. correct?
2. you shared that printer on the VM
i shared the printer XPDotMatrix1
3. you created another local printer to LPT1. this one is assigned to port LPT1.
second printer created "XPDotMatrix2". shared. it also.
4. use the net use command to point LPT1 to the shared printer on the VM
net use lpt1: /d /y
net use lpt1: \\virtualxp-19420\DotMatrix /persistent:yes
no printing. what did i mess up?
vm problem.
i was running windows update in the vmxp. on a restart it gave me this message:
"integration features have been disabled. you can long on to continue without these features. to enable the integration features, you can shut down the vm and start again."
when i continue to the vm machine, it says it's in use and locked. when i shut it down it actually hibernates.
the error message gives a link "how to shutdown the virtual machine". this gives me these directions:
"If a virtual machine is not configured to automatically shut down, you can shut it down manually by following these steps.
Do one of the following:
To shut down from an open virtual machine, from the toolbar of the virtual machine window, click Ctrl+Alt+Del. Or, you can press the CTRL+ALT+END key sequence.
To shut down from a running virtual application, make sure the focus is on the application (click or restore it if necessary), and then press the CTRL+ALT+END key sequence.
In the window that appears, click Shut down.
The operating system will go through the shutdown sequence, and the resources will be released from the virtual machine."
when i follow these directions, it also hibernates.
when i shut it down from ctrl+alt+del it also hibernates.
when i shut down the 7 machine, restart and launch the vm. i get the same message.
You shared the printer on the host as DotMatrix. That's fine. Next, you create a local printer on the VM pointing to \\host\DotMatrix, not ts001.Quote:

No need to share the second printer on the VM. Just make sure it points to LPT1.Quote:
second printer created "XPDotMatrix2". shared. it also.
You're supposed to point to the shared printer on the VM, not the host. I'm assuming that virtualxp-19420 is the vm name.Quote:

Did you try a system restore to a point before the updates? There was a bad update this month that still hasn't been fixed, KB2859537. If you can't do a restore, then at least uninstall KB2859537.Quote:
i was running windows update in the vmxp.
I posted about the bad patch earlier this month:

got it!
the vm problem, that is. seems i can change the settings even tho i'm locked out. so i changed the "what happens when i close" from hibernate to turn off.
now back to the printing ...
... and back from the printing.
works ... PERFECTLY.
again, thanks so much midknyte. thanks also for putting up with my shortcomings.
next time you're in chicago, i owe you a dinner.
NP. Take note of the steps you did. We are about teaching people to fish. :)
