Front intake fan? Oops!
Seems I've had my front fan pointed the wrong way for a few months. I installed it, even though I didn't need to, because my older computer had the exact same one and needed it even less (486!)
I turned it around and havn't noticed much difference, but then again I probably wouldn't.
Question: Does leaving the case off of the computer help cooling? Is it a good idea? The particular computer that I'm talking about (486) has an issue inside with the CD-ROM which means that you have to plug/unplug it very frequently?

My psychology: If your computer is faster than mine (PII 400 Mhz, 64MB RAM), you have ABSOLUTELY no right to complain.

Leaving the side panel off is not advisable. The case was designed (hopefully) to direct the airflow up to the mobo/CPU. Leaving the panel off defeats that purpose. You are also subjecting the components to more dust accumulation.

True, but on the other hand it's a 486 and heat's not as much of an issue, right? The CPU has a good-sized (about the size of two floppy diskettes laid side by side) heat sink and it's extremely annoying to have to move my keyboard and all the other junk that sits in front of it and take the cover off, just to unplug or plug in one ribbon cable and put it back on.
