Operation Deltqa 19
Operation Delta 19 begins, where we find the Queen of Hearts with the computer she built that is up and running. Looks like this section will be devoted to fine tuning and tweaking. (Is there a difference?) Thanks to all of you that have made this possible by your inputs. Vir Dr. helps build a computer long distance so to speak from conception to completion. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Made a typo in the topic heading. How is that fixed?

I am in awe at the speed of this new machine.
I didn't know what I was missing. It is incredible.
This would not have been possible for me to do without the help and input of all those involved, from the first spark in our minds to firing this thing up. Thank you.
...'specially you, bistro. http://www.zing.com/picture/pf7ac859...2/ff125757.gif
AND IT WORKED, first pull....no smoke! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Here I am... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

You are most welcome, QoH. Now...was it as hard as you thought it would be a couple of months ago? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Allllll that hand-wringing and night sweats? Does it make you wonder why people pay so much for a ready-made (that may or may not have all the components they would like to have)? BTW, YOU are the "warranty" for that system. What some folks don't know is that almost everything inside the case--to include the case---is considered by manufacturer techs as FRU's--Field Replaceable Units. Bad motherboard turned in for "repair"....it's usually not "repaired", just replaced with a new one. Bad RAM? Replaced, not repaired. Bad cables? Replaced. etc., etc. Well, you now know how to do it yourself with little to no "downtime" taking it to the shop or shipping it off to the manufacturer somewhere in Tibet.
Ahhh, but you say that NOW you would have to pay for the parts being replaced! Maybe. Most components have their own warranty--if you can stand the downtime--turn it in and demand it be replaced by the manufacturer of the part. Tell them to do it booms-quick or you'll complain to the Supreme Court or their boss's boss. You can usually get the replacement part within a few days.

Thanks for info Mosaic. Guess we'll leave it as is then. With you and the QoH now tweaking and peaking on a new computer .... Didn't hit me until now, but the building is only part of the picture. Get ready world, the 1's and 0's are getting ready to be accessed, modified, cut, copy, pasted, swapped, filed, checked, HI KEY, you name it. Think I'll go with Bistro to the sanctuary in the high mountains if their's room. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Feels good doesn't it, YOU did it. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Get my act together and I'll be there too.

Heck NO! In fact, if I had had the money to buy all the pieces at once and had everything I needed sittin' right here I coulda built it in about 2 hours.
And if the boot disk had been right, weeda been flying right off the bat.
There is those BIOS setup entries, tho. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Thank you for the sheets you typed up. I have a "book" of bistro notes and tweaks...and humor https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I have some setting up still. But no more worrries about how many MB I have left.
If I need more room....I'll get another Hard Drive...and then another... and another... and another.... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Good save, Mosaic https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Thank you greengoose. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
You can handle this. It's about twenty screws. A piece of cake.

OK, boys and girls...let's see if we can't speed up those modems a bit....
1. Go to Msconfig, under the Win.ini Tab and scroll down to the [Ports] section. Under there you'll see Com1 through COM 4 entries.
Replace those entries with these (be careful--double-check your typing):
COM1:=921600,n,8,1,p
COM2:=921600,n,8,1,p
COM3:=921600,n,8,1,p
COM4:=921600,n,8,1,p
EDIT: (litle confusing there from the original post...Exit out and Reboot here.)
NOW.....
2. Copy all the text below THAT IS IN BETWEEN the dotted lines (NOT the lines) into Notepad. Save the file as Modem.reg, NOT Modem.reg.txt.
Save it to your "Hold" directory or any one where you'll find it easily. Right click on the file and select Merge. This will merge the info into your Registry. Restart the system.
--------------------
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Modem\0000]
"Properties"=hex:80,01,00,00,ff,00,00,00,ff,00,00,00,07,00,00,00,0f,00,00,00,\
77,07,00,00,00,10,0e,00,00,fa,00,00
--------------------
3. Now go into Control Panel>Modems and you'll see that there are three new speeds available: 230400, 460800 and 921600. Set your modem at the max speed and check it out.
If it doesn't work well, go down to the next highest speed and so on. You may or may not see that much of a speed diff; but the benefit may be lying elsewhere in performance.
Have fun with it....(This is for 56K modems only, BTW...)
Gotta go back to work...see you later.

Remember that when you have a cpu that is faster than 933MHz you have to get the other shutdown patch. Refering to TA's computer you talked about building. And I'll bet you get a cd-rw so you can put all those .regs and stuff on one so you do not have to hunt them down again https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

It's not going to let me save in Notepad as anything except "text documents" and
"all files [*.*]".
I know I used to have more choices. I have several reg hacks on the OLD. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Something else that is not doing what it's supposed to is the Outlook Express preview pane. I told it to not do that and it still is openable. On OLD when I unchecked that box it locked that part so it didn't even open. Maybe I need to go do the Windows updates ?

I think I'll do my Updates late tonight. I keep getting disconnected. Happens every evening about this time. Mosaic suggested that it might not be so busy then.
I remembered a couple more little things I had before I need. Fixing to go get those.
-
QoH: You sure that's normal? If you picked the max speed, it could be that. Try the next one down if so.
You may have to reboot to "set" that disabled preview pane. Just thought of something else when you mentioned Outlook Express. Let's keep the KAK worm that's going around lately off that system, shall we? It's best to remove Windows Scripting Host from your system as a precaution against that nasty worm. Go to the Control Panel and double- click Add/Remove Programs. Click on Windows Setup tab, then click on Accessories and then click the Details button. Scroll to "Windows Script Host" and remove the checkmark next to it. Click OK. Reboot.
Gets rid of a vulnerability there.
Yes, it would also be a good idea to go to the Windows Update and start downloading. May have to make a few trips. Do you have an antivirus program? Get the latest updates tonight. Forget downloading IE 5.5--stick with 5.01 for now. Too big of a download anyway, and you can always pick up a copy
of it (from a magazine CD like MaximumPC) if you ever want it.

I already did the scripting host in Windows Set up.
Need to go get Innoculateit.
Yep, it happens every evening about this time. I think it's because everybody's just getting off work and fireing their computers up. I'll watch it tho and see if it continues.
Texas Angel has a Zip she offered but there is no USB on OLD. My Xbrother in law has one that is not USB I may ask him to loan me to get the things I need off OLD. Or I may just start fresh. Miss my pic's, though. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I need to work on OLD getting both Floppy drive and CDROM working again. They are both hooked up correctly just not being found by Windows. I put that other floppy in him since that evidently wasn't the problem (i.e. the boot disk deal)...hopefully. CDROM was working before I messed around in there with the floppy. Now neither one works.
Oh, and the printer is working. But when I reboot Windows wants to put drivers on it ??
I tell it no but the next time I reboot it thinks it needs to do that again. I used it's install CD. It's working fine. Got a black cartridge today too. And a new mouse pad. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

He got quite a few of them helping keep me straight when I was trying to answer questions for others. I believe that was during the period of time that MB was powered up and new posting records were being set by the hour by two of the principals in this venture. Correct me if I'm wrong Train. if Windows is still asking for that printer, first check in Control Panel under printers and make sure it's listed there as the default. If so, and it's still asking on boot, then cuss at it for a second, then with the install CD in, let it load the driver. Windows and printers/scanners have had a long-standing feud...
-
All systems go https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I pointed it to the drivers and it installed them.
Rebooted and no Window asking for them. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Printed a test page to be sure. Yep.
Did you say something about doing an defragg ?
Congrats on your 3000 Train. I think I saw it when it happened, but I was kinda busy. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Thanks bistro.
Goose has it partly right. I was jumping between forums with two or three windows open for a while. Have eveen a couple [less than 10] in dos. Mostly questions there though.
Couple in Internet got long, 98 most,95, software for graghics help and Operation Delta in Hardware. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Several windows open lead to my comment about vdr being slow. Noticed they archieve a little more and speed come back.
The QOH was occupied when it happened, so was all of us at that time!

Yes the power was knocked loose on the first install of the floppy. Fixed that. It is definitely tight in there. Have not checked the registry for the NOIDE. I will. Betcha that's it. The floppy in there now is the one I was going to use in here. So it's hopefully not going to make discs with errors like the original did. And there is still the one from "little sweety" I can use. If I could just get one to work! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I threw the original out. I'll check the registry in a few minutes. My daughter already has it in her room. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ I'll go downstairs in a little bit and run them outta there. New DVD player for BD. She has a friend spending the night.
Thanks https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
SPLATS?? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

https://discussions.virtualdr.com/I knew from your descriptive word exactly what it was! I just hadn't heard that !
I'm looking at it now.
I came back up here to print the Reg. key so I can find it.
No "splats" in device manager.
-
Watch for the "splots" too.....
(Splatted dots....)
-
No Splats or splots https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
No NOIDE either.
So I have NOIDE what to do.
I did find the little plug on the back of it attached to the power plug that should have stayed on the floppy drive. hmmmmmmmmmm guess that's it's problem. The CD light flashed but I didn't bother trying it. I'll have to dig "little sweety"'s floppy back out. Then have another look later.

This is great. Can remember couple three months ago The term NOIDE came up and I thought Mosaic couldn't talk right and tonight I understand what the QoH meant when she said NOIDE in the context she used. Just checking in. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Calling it a night. Before I do, thought to leave you another tweak. Take a look at Control Panel>System>Performance Tab>File System>CD-ROM Tab. You should have that set on Quad speed or better. Notice how much the supplemental cache size is. As I remember, it's only 1028. There's a way to increase that so the CD-ROM and CD-RW will access faster. (This'll help prevent buffer under-runs also with burning CD's). And since you have 256 RAM, you've got plenty for this. (Only use if you have 128 or better).
Here's the reg hack--just copy into Notepad (no dotted lines!), save into a folder, rename the extension .reg, r-click and Merge.
---------------------------
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CD-ROM]
"Required Pause Tolerance"=hex:e7,13,00,00
---------------------------
Now go back into the CD-ROM Tab. Whoa! Set for single. Scroll it down to 'Quad Speed or better' and apply it. Reboot. You now have a 4096 cache. CD's will read/access better.
Ya'll have a good night. See ya' tomorrow. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
