Operation Delta 11
This is the beginning of Operation Delta 11 continuing the quest of building two computers, at least. We are presently in the Contemplation and Aquisition phase sprinkeled with an over abundance of......but see for yourself and don't be bashful. Jump in. See here for OpDe 10.

I will try and condense our project in as few as words as possible. This project really began in a HP thread. The Queen of Hearts and others were discussing building a computer some few weeks ago. The Queen of Hearts at one point said "Let's do it" and I agreed. Understand we knew very little about anything computer related. (I knew how to crash one on a regular basis) And building one - impossible. We fortunately had VirDr and some very dedicated people who took us under their wings.(Turned out to be more like drill sargeants.) And so Operation Delta ( Dedicated to Excellence and Long Term Achievement) was launched. We have learned and now have the components listed that we will use. We wanted simplicity, dependability and powerful and did not go for the latest cutting edge components but rather stayed slightly behind the curve to keep costs down. This project is like any other in that it required research, development, money, facilities, support, tools. It has been planned so as not to make costly mistakes. The biggest resource we had and we have and are taking advantage of, is the technical knowledge input by so many of the VirDr members. This is input is invaluable and priceless. The Queen of Hearts and I could not have come this far without it not to mention the wonderful people we have met along the way. Thanks for all your help.

Recommend anyone interested in this project to scan over the past Operation Delta threads. In a nutshell, the participants have gone through tutorials on "how-to-build" (both links and on this forum) and have been given mucho advice on what components to include in their systems--everything from cases to RAM. At this point, they are perusing the net to find the very best prices on such components--a very important step, paycheck-wise.
The saga continues.....stay tuned.....
-
Morning All, Another review of component prices is in order from various indications in the business news etc. The economy slowing, tech stocks falling, etc.
Mosaic, Will review all threads and see what comes up and compare with what you get. Are you good at writing?
Later. Be well. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

In the beginning...greengoose created "Operation Delta". And the world of "build-it-yourself" was full of darkness.
Then Greengoose1 and Queen_Of_Hearts said, "Let there be light!", and others replied "Okie Dokie. Here's the scoop...".
And the light of understanding began to dawn.
And the thread grew and multiplied. And greengoose1 and Queen_Of_Hearts said "This is good in our sight. Let the knowledge flow like the rivers and the prices fall like rain...". And it was so.
And when the time of building shall arrive, they shall verily build a new system. And when finished, they shall dub the system "All Mine". They shall marvel at the wonderful sight and exclaim "Why in the *&^% didn't I do this before? That was easy!".
And their wonderment shall turn into joy as they take upon themselves more megahertz and wing themselves into cyberspace at speeds hereunto they have never known. So it is written, so shall it be done.

I'm in the middle of Deliberating (lunch break). Should be finished today.
Hope I get finished in time to make a couple of calls to vendors.

Hi All, I have been printing out Operation Delta. When finished, I plan to eliminate each post not having to do with the project. Then I will review each Delta section for content and write it up as an outline for the technical content. This will be able to be used as a table of contents/index for each section. Also there will be a master table of contents to facilitate looking up a particular subject segment. There is a tremendous amount of information provided by members of VirDr. Why should it get lost and forgotten?
This can then be used by others who started out as we did. Lacking the technical expertise required to operate, troubleshoot, and finally to build a computer.
I do not know that much about photography, but a step by step pictorial would enhance the written word significantly. That way others could see as well as read. This has been brought up previously.
Okay, y'alls turn. Tear it apart and put it back together better. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

https://discussions.virtualdr.com/Good Lord greengoose !
Sounds like an awful lot of work. Do you think we should go back thru and edit all our off topic posts ?
-
OKay, will tear out the garbage posts of mine, starting tomorrow. Got sent the snow white Posing as Midgets.scr which is a Win32-Hybris.B Worm. Inoculate caught it. Then had to convince the sender. Got to bed 1:30 this morning and up at 3.
Finaly got Inoculate on that computer and ran it. She is now Installing 98 again.
less than 24 hours and when inoculate go through. And this by long distance phone.
So saying Night all for I will not be on the forum much longer for tonight. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Morning All, Train and QoH, I meant I would run a line through each entry with a highlighter on paper. Your way is good for two reasons, of course, as it would make each section shorter and less to wade through. The only drawback is we would lose the "fun" part of it. Need opinions on this from all of you.
Mosaic, It does take a little time, but should we not have the best result we can come up with?
Again, this is all of us and I would appreciate an opinion from each of you.
Have a grat day and be well. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

I had to bump them up.Then I deleted the bump. Not refreshing... I thought it was me. Then yesterday there was a post at 9:42am that never did show up. I knew one was there when I posted at lunchtime but it did not apppear even after bistro or I posted.
On the Win 98 Board I posted to a thread this morning and it shows if you click on the thread, but it did not go to the top of the list, and still only shows one reply on the board. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

This may or may not be the problem, but sometimes if the archives get too big and aren't cleared out by the administrators, it can cause glitches/slowdowns in the current threads. Usually temporary. That, or the glitches are caused only by posters whose names begin with "g".... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Well, folks...about 15 minutes ago, the UPS man delivered a gen-you-wine InWin S500 case to my door.
I must say I'm kinda disappointed....it's made of cardboard!!! And it's got all these stupid stickers all over it. Can't figure out how to remove the sides without cutting that thick tape! Pretty cheap I'd say. The least they could have done is pre-perforate where the drives are gonna be installed! Sheesh!

OK Mosaic , where are you hiding? Want to know a couple of things.
1. Geekspeak or Computerese?
2. That explanation on bumping was good. Did not know about it. How many other simple tricks are there that would help us at the point we are at?
3. How did you learn the area you're good at so fast? What learning platform did you use?
OK, I cain't count. It was three instead of two. Burn me at the stake. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
For all of you, have been visiting the other VirDr forums some. I have been able to contribute a little and learn alot more. One observation, there is a lot that can be done to make VirDr better than it is. And from surfing a little my observation is - there is none better. And that of course is my most humble opinion. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Come on bistro! I'm gettin' a blister from Refreshin' every 15 seconds ! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Hey! Greengoose! Your idea worked! The case was inside the cardboard!!(What a great forum!) https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Anyway...here's the scoop. Very nice. Very roomy inside. Some good features:
The hard drive "cage" (2x hard drives) drops below all the bays--nice touch. Leaves the bottom 3.5 free to install a ZIP or LS120 drive.
The wires from the front (hd light, power switch etc.) are combined into a ribbon, not separate wires--keeps things real tidy--cuts down on the "spaghetti bowl" effect.
An additional fan grill on the back for installing an exhaust fan--hoo-hah!
The mobo sits on a series of "dimples" built into the right side--interesting, but I'd feel better putting a plastic wafer washer between the mobo and the dimples when mounted with the mobo offset screws (they're small paper thin washers--available at computer stores, Radio Shack).
The bays are slide-type--convenient. The case is supplied with enough slide brackets to accomodate 2x 5.25 drives and two 3.5 drives--if you want to mount an additional 5.25 drive, you'll have to purchase the slide bracket from the company or computer store.
Came with a generous amount of screws, but no mobo offset screws. No problem really--have quite a few and your new mobos should have some---again, readily available from the stores.
You can order a metal thumbscrew to replace the rear side-screw( for quick access), but you can also pick up a packet of those from any good computer store. Recommend them.
The left side at the bottom is vented---extra cooling; especially if you have an exhaust fan in the rear.
Anyway, very pleased with the case so far.
From preliminary inspection, I'd say this would be a great one for your new systems.
Any questions?
-
I have a couple.....Is it beige? and what took you so long ! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
How many of those Wafer washers, or do they come several in a bag ?
What else did ya get?
[This message has been edited by Queen_of_Hearts (edited 01-09-2001).]

Sounds like the case on the inside is very functional and roomy. Air flow should be better than normal as it has good volume or cubes. Will it be easy to access from both sides?
------------------
Seek Knowledge First and All Else Will Follow
-
No...that's the only problem that I see...it's neon lime green. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Yes, it's beige. Hey, it was a good dinner...needed to savor it. Then I had to open the box---wanted to be careful so I used a stick of butter to cut the tape. The I inspected the case. Then had to type my dissertation above. Time marches on.... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
-
Greengoose: Air flow should be excellent. One however: the right side comes off easily enough, but the mobo tray is NOT removable. Little odd. But there really isn't any need to access from the right side--lots of room to manuever from the left.
