[RESOLVED] Sluggish computer and NOT RESPONDING often
I posted a thread here: http://discussions.virtualdr.com/sho...NOT-RESPONDING
and was first directed to cleaning the fans of the computer and checking the temperature. I did all that, and although now, the temperature is monitored and not overheating (and yes, it DID need a cleaning), the computer is still as sluggish.
Here was the initial post i had:

I have a desktop computer. It is an Acer about 2 years old. I find that when i work with it for a while, it tends to become more and more sluggish, and often shows 'not responding" for several seconds (sometimes up to a minute) but comes back to working fine.
It is running Windows7 and i do multitask a lot, but is it normal that i have to reboot the computer regularly to get it to be at least normal speed? Things can get so slow that i might need 20 minutes to close all the programs (say i am working with 10 at once) before restarting.
It has the Windows Security Essentials running all the time, Superantispyware application, ad-aware browsing protection.
I am not sure where to look for a possible explanation and solution to this annoying problem.

One thing i noticed, with the processes is that Internet Expolorer 8 is not only taking a lot of memory, but iexplorer.exe process appears more than once at the time. Right now, i see 6 instances (and i had closed one that was using 1,000,000+k. That is when Train suggested i might be dealing with a nasty of some sort.
I am following the initial steps (getting used to that by now!).
Step 1 - Firewall was on.
Step 2 - Full scan with Microsoft Security Essentials; this seems to be possibly problematic: it has been scanning for 17 hours and the progress bar is only about halfway. Is that normal or is that the sluggishness acting up?
