Noise I can't locate

I think I've got a fan going bad, and I think it's in the power supply which is an Antec True Power 2.0 500 Watt PSU. How can I be sure?

I've had the case open, and Mike and I have both listened and can't be sure where the noise is coming from which makes it even more frustrating. It doesn't make the noise until it's been running for a while - maybe 4 minutes or so.

I've blown out all the dust, and we've unhooked one fan to test it and it wasn't the culprit.

I suppose it's possible that it's a drive going...just can't find where the noise is coming from.

Give it the old feel test Place your finger in different locations to check the vib's.
Or use the old car mechanic Technique They would take the oil dip stick and hold it to different areas with other end to their ear.
Don't touch any metal to any area that has voltage in it, (might make for sparkles) Long time till 4 th of July

Make sure the screws that hold the PSU into the rear of the case are tight, incase it is rattling, plus if you have a spare PSU you could try that route. Would it be a pain in the rear to remove the PSU from the top of the case and run it from the desk?

You could also try Nick's screwdriver trick, and put the tip of one to the suspected noisemaker and the handle towards your ear.

Check the screws holding the drives are tight too, as that can cause noise issues.

Will check screws to PSU, and will take the PSU out and run from desk as suggested if the other ideas don't work. I do have a crappy spare power supply I could use to check it as well. It would be okay for a test, but I won't keep it in my machine.

Antec power supplies are not the best. I have one that is a little over a year old that has died.

I had one that wasn't much more than a year old blow up in spectacular fashion :eek: At least it didn't take anything else out with it, which was one consolation.

try just running the power supply on its own with no hard drives or any thing else hooked up to the mother board ie:cd rom drives

Does anyone know if my PSU (Antec True Power 2.0 500 Watt) has one or two fans? The reason I ask is that one is definitely NOT running - the one that is visible from the outside of the case. Hard to see if there is a fan opposite that one on the PSU. If the fan isn't running, it wouldn't make any noise, right? (I'm hoping there are two and that the one I can't see is the culprit.)

Probably shouldn't have done it, but this morning when it was very quiet in the house and the computer was making a racket, I stuck a straw in three fans with the computer running, and they were not making the noise.

Tonight or sometime this weekend I'll take the PSU out and run it from the desk. Didn't get a chance to tighten the screws, will put that on my to do list as well as some of the other suggestions.

I did try the screwdriver trick, no luck there either ( it was before my coffee though ;) )

I have been reading about the Antec PSUs going bad on VDr's forum, so I'll definitely switch to another brand.

IIRC, my Antec that died did have two fans (I took it apart to see what had happened - blown cap was my diagnosis).

Yes, straw into the fans just long enough to stop the fan... :o I'm sick of not being able to locate this noise.

I've figured out a way to get to the second fan w/o taking anything apart so far, but wouldn't you know it, it's being soooo quiet right now. :mad:
It would make sense for it to be this hard to reach fan, and I hope it is...because if not, it means something else much more important is going.

Since I already have one fan gone bad in the PSU, I'll be replacing the entire PSU, but I still want to do my straw test since I just have to know! :)

Going to replace the above fan, and an additional fan that's a bit noisy and of course, the power supply.

Those chipset fans are such a royal pain, it might be worth considering a passive cooler:

It really makes an awful noise, and I can't help but think it's dying.

It most likely is, those 40mm fans have a nororiously short lifespan. My last two builds have had heatpipe chipset coolers, which is a much better arrangement.

So I finally got around to replacing chipset fan with a zalman fanless northbridge cooler, a Thermaltake Pure Power 600W power supply, and another case fan since it was red and I wanted blue :p

Good, glad to hear it. It was a pain to replace that chipset fan. Had to take the motherboard out to do it, and the little plastic clippy things aren't that cooperative. At least I don't hear that stupid fan making a racket anymore, though it does sound like a jet engine next to me now!

Just got the BSOD after I posted this. I'm shutting this down 'til tomorrow.

I did change the settings under startup and recovery system failure - I unchecked "Automatically Restart" so I can get the full error message next time.

That looks like video driver corruption.

Now whether it is a driver or the card, let us see what shows up should you get that BSOD again.

Or the contacts might be corroded a tad.

Remove the card, use a pencil erasure to clean the contact.

Just lightly rub them until all are bright and shiny.
Reinsert the card.

Had that trick work many a time in the last 40+ years.

Guess I'll keep it running longer and see what's up. I haven't changed a single thing, so I'm still mystified.

I just finished reading this and I think your computer is related to mine; maybe first cousin. Mine does weird things and often un-explainable. :D

It never did act up last night. A couple of weird things though - everything in my bookmarks was gone, and it's taking a long time to shut down. In fact, I got the "program not responding" bs when I tried to shutdown.

Power glitch...we do have those, so maybe that's a part of it.

Who knows, guess it's a wait and see thing now.

Your next investment probably now.

Thinking about what you said. Maybe it's possible that the Arctic Silver thermal paste hadn't spread evenly over the new northbridge cooler. Maybe once it was running for a bit it spread and the problem stopped. ( Sounds good anyway! ;) )

Next time I have to use Arctic Silver I'll use a credit card and spread the paste evenly.

Ugh, lots going on now.

Kaspersky found trojan-dropper.win32.dpt on my computer. I deleted it as per instructions which removed an executable file from my desktop. I shut computer down for the night. Rebooted it in the morning, got a BSOD that said something like Checking file system or C, 1 disk needs to be checked for consistency...Checkdisk is verifying filesystem, Checkdisk is indexing...
then something about deleting and indexing entry $0 of file 25 ....

Eventually, windows loaded. I tried to run Kaspersky again...left for work and when I came back in the evening, it was only at 20%. :( I shut computer down.

This morning, I decided that I would start a hijackthislog. I got as far as running Adaware, Spybot, and AVG. After that, I was unable to use any of the virus scans listed since Internet Explorer (I use Firefox) would not work. I was unable to open them from Firefox's IE tab - in fact, I don't think that option was even there.

The next thing I know, I have a BSOD.

The Stop 0xD1 messages indicates that the system attempted to access pageable memory using a kernel process IRQL that was too high. Drivers that have used improper addresses typically cause this error.


Did it list a driver or anything like that?

If it listed a driver, it did it before that screen if that's possible. I wasn't at the computer the entire time, so I don't know the answer...

I remember something in the first three scans about kernel something er ruther...but not enough to answer your question unfortunately. Wish I had taken better notes.
