Hi Gang, Just got in from work and saw the last thread had lost a couple of posts. Thanks DrMDJ for covering and starting a new thread. We might even have some guests tonight and they need to be able to post. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Let's see. I physically installed a modem in BT last night just before all the heavens broke loose. Been slowed down abit because of work and getting myself up to speed on learning this here moderator job. I was not going to install a modem as these computers will be networked. Then I got to thinking that a modem would add backup capability.
News flash, IF and that's a big if, I can make a deal with my company to buy their obsolete 15" monitors what would be a good offering price and would anyone be interested in one as test monitor. No guarantee how long they would last of course. As is deal.
Spragers is getting prepared to build his computer, and running into some delay, and getting the jitters and so forth. Guess what. I been there and know how it feels. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Until Spragers is ready this thread will be covering the progress of BT, Spragers preperation, and any issues that are of interest to whatever member has a concern.
And so we continue. Thanks again DrMDJ for filling the void. Really helps. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

I will order the fans, floppy drive, and TV tuner card tonight after my part time job. Got a bit too jittery and popped off a couple of those little metal tabs, y'all can slap me for it https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ As I now wait for the CPU and my next and final order, I will put together both a pre-build list based on bistro's List (note capitalization) and a final run-down on parts, where I bought them, what they cost, etc.
Back in about 4 hours or so.
gg1- are you running your modem cable through a surge protector in that weather? Or do you just have it installed and not connected...
I have surge protection on the phone lines as well as power lines. When weather gets bad shutdown and unplug. I am ultra conservative, but haven't been blown out of the "water" either. Looks like your doing good. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Spragers: Forgot to mention in "my list" that if you break off those metal tabs too soon, the RAM will not counteract and the power supply will overcharge the RRGD-13 interface, thus causing a right-pod incident in the Westbridge chip configuration. Other than that, it should be OK.
I just wanted to sound "technical" for once... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
And as dozens of lurkers scamper to update their Bistro List's to include instruction saying "Don't break off tabs...". https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

noooo! hmm... tiome to find a welding torch and melt those little tabs back in place... so should I remove the power supply when doing this sort of work? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Seriously... I do have a question though, for the possible webcam use - I wanted to hook it up to my laptop since the other monitor will be in use on the new build. It's a Panasonic CF-35, P150 processor, running Win98 with one USB port. Installed the camera software, no problems (Intel Easy PC camera, CS110 I think). Hooked up the camera, it found the new hardware, and it is listed when connected in the device manager. However, when I run either the included intel capture programs or VisionGS webcam server, neither one can connect to the camera. I have a powered USB hub for "Q" - should I try it out on the laptop? Maybe it's not getting enough power from the laptop?
Thanks!
Have no idea. Sent some emails out. Either it was pulled with no warning to you-know who, or they're trying to move it somewhere else.
spragers: Sounds more of a software prob than power. Like to help but I don't zilch about web cams. At least for now...Howsomever, it's possible that processor just isn't adequate for the job.

Good Morning All, Three of us worked on the ICQ problem (I found its the Compaq) last night but still got no further with it. When someone hollers at me on ICQ, they only get the first letter of my reply. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program as well as my contacts numbers. Nothing has worked yet.
DrMDJ, received many inquiries on what you asked about but nothing on what the problem is.

Hopefully they'll be able to post a re-direct. Looks like that might be what they're trying to do, but the YaBB is getting in the way...
So, spragers, exactly when is this build going to take place? Again, I reiterate and again, I repeat and again, I re-emphasize and again, without trying to be redundant and again, I say again, that list is a guide only. A small rope cast to the builder in need, hanging on the edge of helplessness. It is up to the builder to fill in the details on his particular configuration. It's possible/probable that for his/her config, one step may have to come before the other, etc.. lay out the parts, study them , do a dry run, etc.. Check out the mobo manual and know where those jumpers are that you might need to readjust. Look at the order the IDE/ATA connections are--know where 1, 2, 3 etc. are located. Check it out and see if the vid card would have to be removed in order to install the RAM--will save you some grief if you happen to put the vid card in first, RAM second. Better off the other way around anyway. "Measure twice, cut once".
Thanks Goose. Gotta luv it!

Yeah buddie.
Bistro, you are to humble. You keep improving the "Step by Step Build List" and I can see it now in bright lights on the marquees of the world. "Bistro's Definitive List" and in small letters "change 1,128". https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
But keep working on it, seriously,, as that list will help a newbie builder tremendously. It is a very popular and easy read.

Falcon: May have happened when I tried to post a picture of my pet directly onto the page. It was a shot of Spot, my T-rex. Image was 1920 x 1200.....
Hey Falcon, good to see you. What the others are trying to say is - they don't have the foggiest and neither do I.
A T Rex I'm sure. Must have bought an updated version of Jurrasic Park. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

You're right Goose. Very wishy washy. He needs to just put the list out, say "follow it", and if things go wrong for someone just come back and say "Sorry, but if you knew what you were doing in the first place you wouldn't have needed the list". Or to paraphrase Jaak's signiture: "what do ya want for free?" https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Hey...a question while we're waiting...since when did windrivers.com start with this stupid paid membership in order to access? That was a good spot to find drivers. Another great site bites the dust...

bistro et. al.
I am going to tentatively schedule the build for next weekend (Friday night, Saturday afternoon/evening, & Sunday) and take it from there. Got too late last night so I will be ordering the last components tonight (case fans, floppy, etc.). Checked the requirements on the USB camera box, "Pentium 166 or better" - darn, missed it by 16mhz https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ - however, I know that this particular laptop was also sold with a P233, so I'll keep my eyes open for a CPU or CF-35 for "parts" - unless anyone knows a good place to look for old laptop CPU's online?
And yes bistro, I know the list is only a guide, but it is a good checklist which I will use to double check my own list when I go through a test run, perhaps as early as tonight as well. While I'm looking for that CPU... already had the little bugger apart and back together once, I can do it again if need be https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
sites are biting the dust "all over"?
bootdisk.com is dead?
bovistech.com cannot provide bootable disk images no more?

OK. No wonder I couldn't understand what you guys were trying to say. I thought you guys were trying to be cryptic in speaking of you-know-where b/c of the you-know-what policy about advertisement at whatchamuscallit. I thought, once again, I was left out of the loop.Quote:

Bistro must have blessed BT today as I came up with a free 15"monitor until I can save up enough for the 19". Don't know how well it works until I get home. If it does then I can think about networking the Compaq and BT together and as Sarkazztic said, I would now have a test monitor. I am now going where all you computer heads have gone before. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

OK guys, I know this may be a bit premature, but I'm going to start some preliminary work on our next Delta machine, "Q" - FedEx delivered the XP1700 CPU and the hard drive coolers this afternoon, so all of the pieces are there - but I'll still be ordering the case fan, floppy, maybe an extra IDE cable, and a TV tuner card tonight.
I have my webcum up and working, so if you read this and want to take a look the work in progress, surf over to http://www.spragers.com/computer.html and launch the webcam. In between minor steps I'll work on the component cost lists etc.
So stop on by and wave. I won't see you, but I'll know you're there https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Technical difficulties https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Moving everything around, I guess we need to use the living room for actual living now *shrugs*
Once I get all of the components moved down here I will be working on installing the hard drives into the cooling fan brackets. I've found out that I won't have enough time at once in my schedule tobuild "Q" all at once, so we'll be taking it step by step as time permits, mainly weeknights and a bit on weekends.
gg1, if you'd like to do the honors, and let anyone else in the other forums know that we're good to go... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
heh heh... ok, one of you gets a free slap since I was just trying to figure out how the hard drive brackets connect to the fan... they don't https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Something to make note of in the review of this project... back to work...
For anyone who's on tonight, I'm going to go through some preparations for the building of "Q" - that is, checking the drive mounting locations, figuring out which drives will go where, etc. Tomorrow, hopefully, I will start a new thread and begin the actual build - Either mounting drives, or the mobo components - but not until after I come up with a checklist (don't worry, bistro https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ )
I will leave the webcam on for now, in case anyone really has nothing better to do than watch me move drives around https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
