Operation Delta 3 - 013

We begin a new thread and pick up with Spagers question. He was wondering which Ge Force Card I was going to get. It will be one just behind the cutting edge so as to maximize my money. It is narrowed down to between $60.00 and $100.00 for the card. One thing we try to do is build a good powerful computer for less than a $1000.00. So far, we have been successful in the effort with the first two computers.

spragers: From what I've read, the TI series of vid cards will be faster than the original GeForce 3's--as far as core speed. But it won't be all that much faster as far as rendering. Supposed to speed up games that use programmable shaders. Watch out for the TI 200--watered down, no real diff and probably not worth the price IMHO.

You know having to repair the Compaq gave me alot more confidence to work with components. But I have a funny feeling of anticipation as Friday night nears and I wonder "can I do it?" I want to bring BT up without a glitch, the same as the Queen of Hearts did with hers. Ya know I'm on that side of 60yrs that allows me to delegate to all of those on the other side. I've had a few builds that went off without a hitch; the others were simple enough to correct (usually some stupid move I made being in too much of hurry). Patience/slow go is the key.

I personally have never made any of those mistakes... yeah right..... also on the first machine I built the power supply came with the power setting on 220 volts...plugged it in without checking....what is that awful smell....yanked the cord....and I had melted one of the wires coming from the p/s to the floppy drive.....I was able to repair it so I could get it up and running but I did end up replacing the power supply.....every mistake that I have made putting computers together has been because I got in a hurry....any other times that something has gone wrong it has been D.O.A. parts....and that does happen....bad cpu bad mobo....bad vid card...bad ram....I have had all of these at one time or another....be patient my friend and it will all come together and you have an elite support group that will be right here with you as you are building.....Unless of course Bistro Train Jaak and DrMdj want to meet me somewhere for a few brews and a poker game...

first electronics kit I burnt was a CB mobile HAM radio
I did not have a power supply for it
so I used a car battery.
one day, I connect the darn thing wrong.
kinda smelly

about them geforces.
geforce2 mx200 are not much worse than geforce 2 mx400

saw a siluo t400 (T for tv-out)
good card, but I saw no difference with a 200 TV-out.

have an elsa gladiac 511 tv-out still in wrapper (64 MB)
I ain't even gonna look at how it does.


imho, if you aren't a heavy gamer, geforce2 mx200 is plenty okay.

hell, I still use a TNT 2 M64, 32MB...
its a guillemot cougar maxigamer someone sold me when he upgraded.

will get back a geforce2 MX200 (already ran trials on it) when the elsa is put in system. (I had to get that kid up and running, and could not convince him this elsa was not cost effective.
but hey, it dropped 25 bucks in price since then...

I do my burning with a external hp 8230e. I can and have taken it with me when making help type runs.
Burn a cd or two if possible and then dig in, format or whatever. Sure saves download time on 28K limit dialup. Horrible phone system. Even have the via usb stuff on a cd just incase. 3 hours sure beats 3 weeks.
GG1 knows I use mine in this manner.
Sure beats a floppy.

Back to work, I would rather have an Nvidia than anything else. If I were building I'd go for a Geforce2 ($99 at best buy.com) Good price, and impressive capabilities. Of course if the GF3 goes down in price I'll go for that just as easily.

Make sure it has a fan. Those 64MB turkeys seem to get mighty warm. Some of the 32's ain't fur behind either.

Ridgerunr: You can pick up a Leadtek GeForce2 card for pretty cheap nowadays--anywhere from 50 to 75 buckaroonies.

Even compared to current prices (I'm now officially addicted to pricewatch.com https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ ) you can pre-order the GeForce3 Ti 200 for around $175. Still a hefty price (of course, then you have the new SB Platinum EAX Audigy etc. etc.) but a steal compared to the $250+ for the current GeF3's. GeF2's are around half that, as bistro stated.

Thought I had found a case at tigerdirect.com last night, plenty of bays and a 350watt PSU. I checked again this morning and it's no longer listed... anyone have something I can pound my head against?

Prices are still going south, I sure misscalled that one, but in my favor. The stocks of many companies and earnings are still going down also. There are now and for a while yet some tremendous deals.

If you plan on building, you could price out your components and find out how much money to put aside and then take 6 months to buy. Why, one reason is the weekly specials each resseller seems to have. Train told me one component I bought was $90.00 cheaper than what he paid a year ago. "Cheapo Depot?" Sounds like a fun place to browse. There's a place near here called "Crazy Ralph's" but I don't think he carries computer equipment LOL

Still speaking of video cards, just how big of a difference is there between the GeForce3 200 and 500? For example, you can order a GeF3 Ti200 for around $170, or you can order the 500 for about twice that. YIKES!

If only there was one place that had everything, at the lowest prices, and low shipping rates (I'm not going to pay $15 shipping on a $10 network card LOL)

Which is why I wouldn't mind a pentium III, even if it runs at only 800Mhz. A while ago that was state of the art, and I don't mind being a little behind (like six months) the times. Of course now there are very few computers available that run at this speed, except for celerons (I won't touch the Celeron, of course)

What would you reccomend if I were to build? I have seen many computer guys that won't even touch pentiums in general, and swear by AMD. But Pentium seems to be the sole choice of most PC makers.

A bit cooler outside; static builds up. be sure to touch the casing first each time you handle a component or go into the case. You can plug in the power supply, keeping it off, and that will ground the case (as long as your house wiring is grounded properly--some houses have a ground jack in the outlet, but may actually not be connected https://discussions.virtualdr.com/).

Good choice. I remember just a few months ago the 32MB version was $99 at bestbuy.com. The 64MB was like $135, I think. It is a buyers market.

Unfortunately I may not be present at the beginning of the build, as I am probably going to the state museum for a Haloween party. Not really my age group, but my parents always like to go to the pumpkin auction. I'll sign on as soon as I get back.

Well, unfortunately it is looking more and more like I will not be around for tomorrow night's gala affair. I really hate to miss the initial fun, but... If time permits I will check in late friday to see how its going. But more than likely it will be saturday morn before I join the BT action (of course it will be done by then, but...).

Refresh my memory on something though. Did you buy the boxed retail (non-oem) processor? And what heatsink/fan combo did you go with?

Sounds like you got some really good deals there, gg. Good going. Not now, but after you get the basic system running, you may want to download/install the latest drivers from Nvidia. That system will smoke. Remind me again: what sound card?
