Operation Delta 3 - 006
Was downloading when the thread ran into problems and Train called me. Sorry for the delay in getting this one started. I had asked jaak and DrMDJ a couple of questions on the previous thread.
We are building the third in a series of resonably priced but powerful personal computers. We do this to help anyone that wants to build how to do it instructions and answers to questions by the Delta Crew in real time. Right now we are waiting for the rest of the components to come in so that we may start on BT. Hang around and get aquainted with the Delta bunch. A more wonderful bunch of computer jockeys you won't find anywhere else. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Remember, if you participate, you become part of the Delta Crew with all the usual perks, benefits, and rights according to Bistro's Edict from on High. This came into being from his trip to Nepal and the ascent of the "mountain". Only he knows what happened. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I had saved the last thread when I got home tonight but will see if there's anymore to it. Later. Need sleep now. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

"And Bistro, approaching the Master with much trepidation, mumbled "Uh...Master?". The Master replied "Yes, Bistro, my dubious student? What do you have on? Your mind? Speak quickly, for I have not had my morning coffee as yet and cannot endure thy babblings without it". "Master", Bistro asked,"When I leave this Mountain of Computer Whiz-dom and go into the Valley of Need to apprentice with the Great Virtual Doctor there, what shall I say to all the less informed that cometh my way?". The Master rolled his eyes upward and mumbled the letter "Y" several times over, then spake: "When thou goest there, abiding mainly in the Delta Region, tell all who live there or travel through that land that they can all enjoy the perks, benefits and rights of the land, without cost or obligation. Let them know that they are welcome to abide there and asketh what they will. Tell them that they may freely drink of the knowledge from all who also abide there (even though I moan to number you amongst those knowledgable ones). Encourage all, great or small, to share what knowledge they may have so that all may benefit. Now...hasteneth thyself out of my sight and maketh thyself useful elsewhere until I calleth for thee specifically...and be not surprised if that calling cometh not soon."

Bistro.....if I go the sound blaster route I may have to tap your infinite wisdom on disabling that emulator problem.....1 other thing I am testing the ability to setup a dual boot with windows 2000 installed first...I ghosted my existing 2k setup to my new 40 gig drive...setup in 2 equal partitions. and am doing the test with my old 10 gig and 20 gig drives....If all goes well I will install the 20 gig back into the new machine along with the 40 and have the dual boot running so that I can utilize 98se game playing that 2k does not do as well at least for certain games....will update tomorrow on the progress thank goodness for a laptop that I can connect to my lan for cable modem access to be able to post here when working on the main machine.
-
Easy. Unless you have some old DOS-based games you just can't part with, you don't need the emulator. Device Manager>Creative Misc devices> SB 16 emulator. Select to "disable in this hardware profile"--do not remove it. That should automatically remove settings in the autoexec and config.sys files for that emulator, but sometimes it doesn't. Might want to check them before rebooting and remove any lines that refer to the emulator. Sent mine to the Canyon of Needless Drivers a long time ago and haven't missed it at all.
-
GG1,
Follow up to Bistro's post: you may well have to manually comment out a couple lines in autoexec (for the SB16 emulation). No big deal though.
As for the MS patch... Patch in regard to what? Drives over 32 gig?
So am I to understand correctly that you tried hooking your drive (40 gig) up to your Maxtor Ultra 100 card and it didn't work? Could ya update me on what exactly happened/happens?

Ouch!
An interesting read here. I had seen tests in the past relating to Athlons and the speed at which they fry when there are problems with the heatsink/fan. ASUS and others had run them. They indicated that ya at least had a few seconds before any real damage would be done. Seems not to be the case though. And it was my understanding that the new Palomino cores had built-in overheat protection (unlike their predecessors). Seems also not be the case, or what one would expect. Looks like Intel has a leg up on AMD in at least one reguard.
Goose, when you get BT built would you please remove your heatsink to confirm the above results? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Good Morning All, Just looking in for a sec.
DrMDJ, will post tonightthe procedure and results for you. The A/ MS patch was in regards to going over 32GB.
With the PCI card in and the adaptor cable hooked up to the HD I get the mesage that there is no operating system installed. Yet reverting to original configuration works just as it should.

GG1, that single megabyte difference I mentioned bothers me.
I will look at something.
you see, I noticed it again today.
maxblast reported just ONE megabyte difference in these two drives.
However, the drives weren't true identical twins ( they's sold as same size/speed, but have differing model sub number =
maxtor 5T040h4
| 5T040H4 | 16,383 | 16 | 63 | 40.0 GB |
and 54098H8
| 54098H8 | 16,383 | 16 | 0 | 63 | 40,980 MB | 80,041,248 |
**this info is pasted from the txt files found at maxtor.com, with info on these drives**
Damn, the third maxtor 40 giga is at the shop, in that other epox... I believe its a 54098H8 as well.
a fourth 40 is an IBM.
can perhaps look at the two 30 gb drives... if same...
[This message has been edited by jtdoom (edited 09-25-2001).]
I know I once saw drive size mismatch on true identicals, EDIT>> I even saw different fdisk numbers reported on same drive...WHEN different partitioning tools/versions were used.... Thus, what I saw was either caused by having used different versions of fdisk, or maybe fdisk sees them different than maxblast, or it is a combination of fdisk/maxblast/on different BIOS & controller.
but, again, they did show just one megabyte difference. (and it did not use overlay)
(well, I think I even wrote about what I saw a few months ago.)
sorry for the edits.

Norton System Works 2001 Professional for Win 95/98 can be purchashed for $11.00 plus shipping at www.directdeals.com. When the page opens up go to the right hand top ten column, item 3. The book or instructions can be downloaded at the bottom of the page. Found this as a result of researching Ghost that JTDoom had been helping me with.
With Ghost you can back up your hard drive and in 15 min. have it reinstalled on a new one if you lose a hard drive whereas I am still reinstalling "stuff" from my hard drive failure.
I want our Delta Threads backed up and backed up as well as other "stuffies". https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

OK, guys and gals...not to change the subject, but it's come to my attention that there's some unscrupulous people out there sending out "patriotic' emails with attachments that are infected. Already got three of them myself--Norton caught all three. Neighbor got two just yesterday. Checked with some folks "in the know" and they concurred that there are a slew of these going around. Recommend NOT opening any attachments without scanning first. (Personal preference is to delete all email attachments from folks I don't know and scan all those from people I do know). One of the emails was listed as from a person's name (sounds innocent). Watch out.

GG1,
The MS patch I referred to is here. Though it talks only about scandisk, it actually replaces the Windows protected mode ide driver (applicable across the board), ESDI_506.PDR, and a subsequent DLL. As such it should be applied by all with drives larger than 32 gig.

Jaak,
Ya lost me. I'm not sure I follow what you're saying or asking. But i'll take a crack at it.
Drive models, even stated as a given size, can vary somewhat in their precise size. As for the cyls/heads/tracks numbers you showed... You will note that the numbers equate to 8 gig (16383 * 16 * 63 * 512). That is a common set of settings used for large (ie. greater than 8 gig) drives. Western Digital, for instance, gives those numbers for use for all their 8+ gig drives. Not to worry though. It does not mean the true size of the drive is not being seen. Those numbers mearly passify the bios.

I can't stand having a system that works just fine so here I go again trying to make what works fine work better or destroy it in the works.....I decided that I want to add an atapi zip drive...I already have 2 hard drives a cdr and a dvd drive....My mobo has ata100 built into the ide channels so I bought an ata66 promise controller card...It will be here Friday. I am going to hook the zip to it and possibly a 3rd hard drive that is only ata66 (The other 2 are ata100 and are attached to the mobo on the ata110 controller). What can I expect when I plug the card into the pci slot and attach my drives to it and boot up the machine...I am dual booting 98se and win2k.

sarcasticc
look at the via drivers page
new version got posted, and in there, you find a tool for zipdrives, and a method is described to set them to PIO3.
http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2
somewhat down the page>>
Do you use an IDE Zip drive?
If you do not, please go onto the next question. If you do use an IDE zip drive, download and install the latest 4in1 drivers if you have not already done so. Then download and install the IDE-Busmaster V3.12 - http or ftp. Then set the Zip-Drive to DMA disabled and PIO-Mode 1 in BIOS. Open the the IDE-Tool provided with Busmaster-Driver and set the Zip-Drive to PIO-Mode 3. Restart your computer and the process is finished. For Iomega Zip drives, a new driver has just been released. Please make sure you update your driver to the latest one.

hi,
cannot investigate on two identical twin drives right now.
I know I once saw drive size mismatch on true identicals, and it either was because of different versions of fdisk, or maybe fdisk sees them different than maxblast, or it is a combination of fdisk/maxblast/on different BIOS & controller.
but, they did show just one measly megabyte difference.
(I think I even wrote about it back then.)
anyway, same thing like i saw today.
(too bad they's not true twins.)
btw, they are/were connected on highpoint,
And I can't tell (cannot remember) what the disk currently in epox tray was on when it was blasted.
I have seen a few hangs in file explorer when the drives get swapped out.
but hey, ME and win98SE don't like their data disks exchanged.
(the recycle bin/_restore folder is an issue...)
will be glad when the epox is back on win98SE
(I hate these tests, but I gotta know if the epox board and peripherals have issues with ME. So far, its standby and suspend work. and Now I can add the sblive... and then try that all over again.)
meanwhile, I'll hit the sack.
I/m numb.
am of a mind to look at numbers reported on ONE drive with maxblast, ME boot disk, and SE updated fdisk, and orig 98 fdisk, and maybe also OSR2 fdisk.
I am almost sure they will tell me different sizes. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Hi All, Another long day at the salt mines. And because this new computer system upgrade is working so badly we are going to add another plant to the system Wed. Guess, I'll get another yellow tablet.
DrMDJ, Would you demonstrate the upper temperature limit for us. I do not understand what you are asking me. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
If Bistro is talking about the WTC virus. It has hit some people I know. On my computer, I do not have outlook express installed even. I use three others (emails) that are checked by AV software. And unless I know about the attachment, those aren't opened. I believe the majoity of virii get in through email.
Sarkazztic, please do not mess up your computer if its running well. Build another one first big enough to run your "projects" on. And you could do it on the Delta Thread to show everyone how you build a "rocker". Prices are still going down and you could save up while BT is being built. I really believe if you want to take the time building on a forum like this it helps a lot of people. And of course with the Delta Crew watching over your shoulder, you just couldn't make a mistake. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
OK DrMJD, Here is my sad story of the PCI card. Shut down pc, disconnected all cables on the back of the pc, made sure I was discharged ( no static elec.), unscrewed three retaining case screws, and pulled the pc out of the case. Found three PCI card slots. The fisrst one is for a network interface adapter, the second for the modem, and the third was empty. This is where I installed the Ultra ATA 100 card. At this point and I had to do it three times I installed the drivers. Rebooted and checked device manager for any problems. There were none. Then the adapter cable was in stalled and that's when I got the message of no operating system installed.

That stuff that via has posted about internal zip drives is relatively new. I'm not sure why it is there. I have never done anything special (the things they describe) and had no problems installing internal zip drives on via chipset boards. Maybe there are some special cases somewhere, but I would say don't follow via's instructions unless a problem arises. Simply plug the internal zip in and let win detect it.
You "should" have no problem putting the zip on the Promise Ultra66 if you choose too. In fact ya might as well. While some DVD drives will use ATA66, in general DVD, cd, cdrw and zip drives are only capable of ATA33 at best. So one is best offloading non-ate100 devices and reserving the MB controllers for devices that can actually benefit from ate100.

GG1,
So what you are saying is that:
1) you moved the 40 gig drive from the MB controller to the ultra card
2) you booted up and the card and drive were recognized, and you were able to boot in to Windows.
3) you installed the windows drivers for the ultra card
4) you installed some adapter cable and after which you could not boot again
Correct?
What adapter cable was this? That's where I get lost.

DrMDJ, Sorry, I guess I did not explain well enough. I put the card in and installed the drivers then powered down and disconnected the ribbon cable on the hard drive and connected the ribbon cable from the PCI card to the hard drive. When I powered up again the monitor said there was no operating system installed. The blue end of the cable is plugged into the PCI card. But whenever I reverted to original configuration all was well. When the PCI card is installed it is detected but not the drivers, yet the drivers are detected on the PCI card when it is not hooked up to the the hard drive through the adapter ribbon cable. Looks like when you want to run the 1s and os through the PCI card, they don't make it to the hard drive and that is not good. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

I would like to report that my dual boot is up and running....and the special part is that I had win2k installed first....I ghosted my 20 gig win2k drive onto my new 40 gig in 2 equal size partitions and then took that drive out and put the 20 as a slave to the 10 gig that I had originally as a slave...installed 98se to the 10 gig and did a repair of the win2k to get the boot manager onto the c drive...all worked well so I formatted the 20 gig and ghosted the 10 gig to it in 2 equal 10 gig partions and put the 40 gig back in and then did the repair of the win2k to get the boot manager up again and voila everything is perfect. I can have my cake and eat it too along with doing something that many said that I could not do. I have tested my favorite games out on the 98se side and they do play alot better
-
GG1 I wasn't being literal when I said I was going to mess something up....I am a tweaker...I am not satisfied unless I am pushing the limits......I currently have an athlon 750 and my big athlon 1.2 and an old 120 mhz laptop that works awesome by the way with win95 on it.....and never to be satisfied I do want to add a few toys to my new machine but am already looking to build another one just for games and testing....I am looking at a socket 370 board that supports celeron 266 mhz all the way up to pIII 933 here is a link http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=728LMR
I have a celeron 333 chip that I would like to see how fast I can overclock it...and If if burn up this 41 dollar board big deal it will be all in the name of science right...just kidding...I am way to frugal to intentionally tear something up....but I may indeed pick this one up to play with...just add a cheap case and a decent video card and instant test and game machine
-
GG1,
Now I think I get it. You had the drive (still) on the motherboard controller, installed the drivers for the ultra card, then came down and switch the drive to the ultra card. After that the drive didn't work (when on ultra card).
Here's what the problem likely is. When you move that drive to the ultra card the drive geometry and/or translation methodolog being used changes. With the drive on the motherboard one set of values/methods is being used, and with it on the ultra card another set is being used. The net result: the data can't be read due to the different translation. To use the drive (now) on the card you are going to have to go back and set it up (re-partition and restore the data) with the drive on the card.
So, unfortunately, your gonna have to:
- With the drive on the MB controller, create a Ghost (you said you have that now) image of the drive (or at least that first 32 gig partition you set up).
- Move/connect the drive to the ultra card.
- Re-FDISK the drive (now you can use the full 40 gig as you wish, and partition it accordingly).
- Ghost the image created above back in to the (new) first partition on the drive.
PS. You did not install Maxblast (overlay) initially on that drive did ya? If so that would also be a problem when moving the card to the ultra card. The overlay would need to be removed.

hear hear, at long last, it's been put in concise form by our best friend..
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
GG1, if you haven't done so
create two copies of the maxblast disk,
and two copies of a good booter floppy for your OS (to be)
(also create two systemised floppies with ghost.exe and mouse.com on it)
to test the booter floppy, boot from it
shut
also test the ghost floppy, by booting from it.
shut,
this procedure is to be used ONLY if you DO NOT have OVERLAY on older drive. That's because it would be skipped afterwards, with an invisible drive as result...
boot into BIOS setup
- select bootorder to A: > SCSI (or bootROM) > CDROM
- enable TRY other boot devices
- Refresh ESCD (update cofiguration data/aka force NVRAM update)
- save, and exit
it reboots
get in highpoint control panel by CTRL + H
select to use the connected drive as boot device (if more than one, you can even select which.)
reboot
boot from maxblast
prepare the new drive on highpoint.
(maxblast tells you which controllers it sees drives on)
go advanced option, fat32, more than one partition
partitioning and formatting will take all of five to seven minutes (mostly spent reading the screens)
it will ask for your system floppy.
because it also sees the old system disk, you are presented with an option to clone this drive over
(if you don't you won't be again offered the option without redoing the drive... but then again, at least YOU can use ghost. I have to write this for those without ghost as well, see) https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
so when it asks, you either go with it, or decline, and use ghost instead.
(and goose, if you start KNOWING you gonna use ghost, it would be wise to disconnect the older system drive, (IDE ribbon and power). you see, just ONE mistake, and your old drive gets wiped. Maxblast DOES tell you what type/which controller it finds the drive on. But mistakes happen... Murphy is alive and kicking. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
personally, I would use ghost.
mouse.com will help ya.
once the older drive is ghosted over (you do partition to partition!!!!!)
you should be able to boot from new drive.
to test it, disconnect the older one (power and IDE)
if al runs well, leave it off, get it out, use it in BT at a later date
to do this while an overlay is present, you have to select bootorder so it boots from normal IDE controller, not SCSI.

Jaak,
Maybe I am just not understanding the issue(s). I focused on the fact that you listed two drives showing identical cylinder, head and sector count numbers (ie. 16383, 16, 63), yet with slightly different total sizes/capacities (ie. 40.0gb and 40.980 gb).
The point I was trying to make is that with the larger drives today (ie. anything over 8.4gb) the conventional method of using (and reporting) the cls/heads/secs as a measure of their size is out the window. Typical programs/utilities for reporting drive info will generally use bios int 13 calls to report this info. But that is misleading. Drives today aren't addressed as clys/heads/secs (logical geometry). So if one requests of display in this format a (essentially) made up set of numbers is shown.
When an int 13 call is used for any drive over 8.4 gig it will always return 16383, 16, 63. That's because that is what the "logical geometry" of the drive will always be (by convention). But the logical geometry is not the real physical size. The physical drive is really seen (and addressed) as a group of sectors (only). So, say, if a drive is 40.0 gb it would (in reality) be seen as 83220 sectors (each 512 bytes). But, in terms of trying to turn this in to the "traditional" cls/heads/secs display it would show as 16383/16/63. In fact, some software may show it as 1023/16/63. But in reality these numbers are meaningless.

Hi all
DrMDj
have a fresh head and some cafeine in it.
at the moment I can recall having seen different drivesize reported by varying versions of fdisk, when ran on the same disk (that was way back)
when I encountered this, I had fdisked and formatted the disk on a working PC, and copied the cabs folder (with the version of windows this machine needed) to partition.
to my chagrin, I could start all over, because the drive was seen incorrectly by the booter for that version.
another instance of mismatching can happen when the BIOS needs the drive jumpered to use 15 heads rather than 16, and the drive was prepared on a conventional "16 head system".
this 15/16 issue should never happen with the highpoints.
DrMDj (once again) made a real good point about GG1's "limited to 32" drive.
GG1 told us he stayed without overlay.
still, with the highpoint having native support for the true size, I would clone the stuff while "32limited" is connected to MOBO connector.
"32" partition one to "40 on HPT" partition one, "32" partition 2 to "40 on HPT" partition 2.
(GOOSE, to do the cloning, you may very well have to boot from the OLD drive, and boot to DOS. ESPECCIALLY IF THERE WAS OVERLAY ON THE OLDER DRIVE.)
this means you have to set proper bootorder the way you need.

to boot from cdrom, when it's on a true scsi, you can easily do so, and a start floppy will see it (no sweat)
when its on a highpoint, hmmm, the start floppy don't find your CDROM.
you "may" be able to boot directly from it, tho, I did not try that.
anyway, the readme on highpoint 370 tells you it is better to not connect cdrom/atapi devices to it.
just the one issue (no cdrom support when using floppy start disk) is enough to heed the warning.
when I tried it today, ME floppy didn't find cdrom, and neither did an 98SE floppy.

Hi klemming, All the components have not come in yet. The In Win S500 case, WD 40GB HDs (2), and RAM are in. The ASUS A7V MOBO, 1.1Ghz AMD Tbird, fan are on the way. Have to pick up a sound card. Operating system will be WIN 98SE. 17" monitor.
Budget = $1000.00 or less.
Had a HD failure and we've been working on it and the subsquent upgrading and whatever else people wanted to know about. Replaced the CDROM, the HD (WD 40 GB HD) and even though the one drive that is over 32GB is detected, it cannot be used because of the 32GB barrier. So got a Maxtor Ultra ATA 100 PCI card and the drivers are installed but it's not picking up the HD at all. That was short and I hope enough is there for you.
BTW, the PC being worked on is a Compaq 5360.
