Operation Delta 3 - 004
We now continue:
Goose has been able to fdisk and format the 40GB harddrive. Now the problem is to get the darn Compaq QuickRecovery disk to install on the harddrive. There is no install or setup in the cd that we can find.
Any Ideas

Hi,
he has no SOS or emergency restore floppy?
also, bomide may need to be set up.
something I saw when I searched for mobo info came up in the other thread.
btw, the info I got was for UK versions, so goose should go to US support instead.
here is the excerpt...
Compaq Hard Disk Drives
A lot of Compaq hard disk drives are usually partitioned into two or three depending on their size. One or two DOS partitions and a small (12MB) non DOS partition.
This non DOS partition contains the BIOS setup utility and settings and other tools and is accessed by pressing F10 at start up when the cursor flashes in the top right corner of the screen.
this is probably absent on the new drive... so he has to create the floppies
The machine needs this partition information to run and so it is a good idea to make a back-up, particularly if you plan to "fiddle" with the hard drive at all.
A backup can be made using the "Create a Diagnostics Diskette" option from this very setup screen. It is very simple, two floppies are required (one labelled setup and the other labelled diagnostics) all instructions are given on screen and the process takes about 5 minutes. These disks are used to recreate the non DOS partition as below.
These disks are also available (in compressed a form) as sp7781.exe (Diagnostics) and sp2141.exe (Setup) from from the softpaq page.
MIND YOU, goose may need other softpacs
Creating Non DOS Partition
Boot from Setup disk sp2141.exe
Message states that there is no Diagnostics Partition, recommends there should be and gives the option to create one.
Accept this and you are prompted to reboot from the Diagnostics disk sp7781.exe.
Follow prompts to switch between Setup and Diagnostic disks several times, this takes about 5 mins.
EDIT>> this was as far as got on US site.
it has plenty updates, and drivers and such, but I did not find the restore Emergency rescue floppy. http://web14.compaq.com/falco/sp_list.asp

Kind regards, Jaak

can it boot from the restore CDROM?
one has to hate these machines, and the softpaq update hell.
but, if it still boots, goose might be able to create the required floppies
another thought that may work;
he may be able to use ghost, and clone it drive to drive.

Hi Jaak, I'm up. Had made a Compaq Emergencey Recovery Disk that allowed me to install the two restore disks. They showed a couple of errors as I was installing. So reinstalled and got rid of a couple. Got more "stuff" to do but we're getting there. Lot of difference in the operation of this computer now. Need some sleep - more later. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Good Evening All, I am back with a bigger, faster, motin gator mean computing machine. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Ha, did you think it would be anything less with all the help I have had. All of you that helped - my undying thanks. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
You know what my biggest problem was/ Fear of the F disking and formmating. Next was physically getting into my computer. As Bistro and Train always told me when I first started it is easy once you know a few rules to follow.
Another thing. Take it one step at a time and don't hurry. I had to format three times because of me.
Here are the stats. 32X64-133 256MB RAM, Pine CDROM 52X, and one of my 40GB WD HD.
Can't get into my G drive yet although it's there. CDROM drive is on H drive.
Long time ago, I had made a Compaq Recovery Disk (floppy)and it was this disk that let me access my two Compaq Restore disks. Had to reinsatll 4 times because of different errors. The WIN98 upgrade disk was installed twice. (cleaned the disk.
I have gotten more familiar with DOS commands as a result of this effort.
Bistro, thanks for you inputs. Brief, concise and to the point.
DrMDJ, Thanks to you also and now we get back to the building of BT.
Ridgerunr, I'm sorry. Maybe you should't leave. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Jaak, you're running commentary, although we couldn't communicate was great.
We shall see about hpkiller name.
Train, again thanks for changing over the post.
Medic, T-bolt, Sarkazztic, what can I say - you were there too. Noone can fail with the group of people we have on VirDr.
Daizy and the rest of you that are just getting your feet wet. All you have to do is ask questions and then jump in. I can personally guarantee you will not fail in anything you try to improve your computers.
Daizy, I need your HTML favorites again. I believe you said you had a "kabillion". And I have a hard drive to handle it. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Of course, as much as I had saved, I still lost a bit. Got to start reinstalling programs and such.

had we suspected a dying CDROM as well, what would we have done?
Personally, I could have taken a small excerpt out of that butter thingy I once posted, which actually also tests wether CDdrive reads in DOS/CDrom disk is damaged.
or posted a sumarry rewrite of the procedure.
(summary = in DOS, copy sth from CDromdrive to Hard-disk.)

Good Morning All, The repair seems to be stable. No problems and what an improvement in processing. You click on the mouse and it is there.
The RAM I replaced was a Siemans. Train thinks I have a computer that was made for overseas because of what's in it.
Now back to BT. Going to order the Inwin case S500 series mid tower, the A7V MOBO (I like all the spare slots), and a 1GH AMD CPU. Have to check the prices one last time tonight. Prices still going south. I am going to put WIN98 SE in this one. Why? I want to be able to get into the sofware. But with the two harddrives at a total of 80MB will install another OS as yet undetermined. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

32 gig barrier? With/on what?
PS. Since your going the A7V route, here's a little reading material for ya that you can look at while waiting for the board. Among other things it talks all about (what the issue was/is, how to resolve) the imfamous (and mysterious to some) "running hot" issue with those boards.

Hi DrMDJ, https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ You know where I got the idea. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ As I learn and study and listen to all of you, I had to learn to be flexible. If I feel I have made a mistake in judgement I change. Let's see, I was wavering in my choice of cases and one your posts showed me that I should stay with it.
I want the most for the bucks if you remember. I'm going through what everyone goes through for the first time in building. I question everything time and time again.

I'm just busting your chops GG1. I understand your apprehensions. It can be good (reassuring) to be able to have virtually the same thing as someone else you have (can have) direct contact with should something go wrong. You're the one who has to be comfortable. The only thing I'll say is, the other choices you were considering would have been just fine as well.
As for the case... It's a fine case. The only point I was making in my earlier post was that if for some reason you can't/couldn't fine that case readily that 4 or 5 others I listed from InWin were completely identical to the S500, and therefore could be substituted without sacrifising anything.

As I recall, Win 95 had a so-called "32gb barrier"; but the barrier really resides with some older BIOS's that could be remedied by a flash upgrade; or if they weren't flashable, a drive overlay program.
-
Nothin' so-called about it. It's hard and fast with all Win95 versions. No fix from MS, nor plan to offer one.

No, no...I meant I "so call" it.... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ ...just like everybody else "so calls" it. Yeah....that's what I meant...
Good article on that. Basically, if your BIOS is newer than 1998, chances are good it supports LBA and should have no problem. Older BIOS: go to the manufacturers website and see if there is a flash upgrade for it. Upgrade the OS to 98.

Sorry Bistro sir, misunderstood.
As for 32 gig limitation... As pointed out is the article Bistro gave (just skimmed it), it is not necessarily sufficient to say in general that bioses dated after 1998 will support greater than 32 gigs. While the possibility to handle the necessary cylinders/heads/sectors has existed for a while, many bios makers did not simply implement a "maximum possible" design in their bioses. Many seemed to tailor what they allowed (what they could handle) at a given time around the largest drives available at the time (and seemingly to be available in the near future). So often bioses were just put out that would handle up to 32gig, or something in the 40s, or maybe 64gig, etc. So you can't just assume a post-98 bios handles over 32 gig (unless it is much more current than that). In most cases though these bios makers offer an update to handle larger than 32 gig drives, at least up to like 64 gig. Ya just have to check. And if all else fails, you get yourself an add-on ide card that handles what you need.

Folks, agree with you on the BIOS bit, but here we are talking Compaq. Antique BIOS in other words.
He fdisked and partitioned in such a manner as to be able to use 32GB. The other 6+gb is there but he is unable to access it.
The last Bios upgrade available for mine was the Y2K correction and allowed the bios to go from 8.4GB to 32GB. Sounds like they used 95 bios for 98 to me. Might explain, questionable, why so many people had problems with the darn things.

Not surprised Train. Compaq wasn't the only one to call it quits at 32gig on an existing board/system. You can't keep supporting the old ones for ever.
If the Compaq can't support booting off a device on an add-on card (don't know if it can or not), then you're stuck with the 32 gig. Going the disk overlay route just isn't worth it for the extra few gigs.
So you just set the jumper on the drive that limits what's seen to 32 gig, right?

DrMDJ
Reference the above. He set it for single harddrive. And my booklet is for the 30GB, so could you enlighten me?
We discussed getting 30GB harddrive[s] for the Compaq and I will probably try a Maxtor card in mine [with a 30GB] as I remember several post where people were unsuccessful with the promise cards in Compaqs and they never posted back https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ After we suggested trying another brand.

Train,
This was a Western Digital drive he got (has) right? The WDC drives have a jumper on the back that limits the size that the bios (or anything else) sees to 32 gig. The reason I asked about the jumper being set was because in my experience it is best to set this jumper if the drive is in fact going to be used as a 32 gig. If the bios is just given parameters equivalent to 32 gig I've found this can be a potential problem (or lead to one). The reason is that while the bios may be content to think of (treat) the drive as 32 gig, other software, including windows, may not.
Nowadays Windows, and other software running under it, most often bypass the bios for querying info or reading and writing to a drive. They communicate directly with the drive. Granted, the drive here is partitioned to 32 gig. But the possibility exists for Windows or some othe software to see the full capacity of the drive. As a safeguard, the jumper should be set so that everyone can only see that drive as a 32 gig (cause the drive won't let it see more).
