I'm getting a second hard drive tomorrow and I've gotta install it myself. Its the first major thing I've done to my pc besides adding DRAM memory, and so I'm worried that I could do something wrong and naff up the whole system. I've got 2 IDE sockets, one gas my drive c: in it and the other has drive d:, the cd-rom. What is the best thing to do? To put it as slave to c:? or to the cd-rom?

In general, for fastest reading and disk to disk transfers, Set it as slave to the cd-rom.
A question or two for you. Are you going to partition it? And Read the information that comes with it. It is new, right?

Just a suggestion, If you can get a power supply and jumper it in [do not mount in the case] maybe you will be able to boot far enough to read your BIOS info.
Just a IDEA is all. Do not see why it can not work?

Just got this. To good to pass up https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Beside we are do for a laugh https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Dear Abby:
My husband is a lying cheat. He tells me he loves me, but he as cheated our entire marriage. He is a good provider and has many friends and supporters. They know he is a lying cheat, but they just avoid the issues.
He is a hard worker but many of his coworkers are leery of him. Every time he gets caught he first denies it all, then he admits that he was wrong and begs me to forgive him. This has been going on for so long, everyone in townknows he is a cheat. I don't know what to do.
Signed: Frustrated

Why don't you move to New York and run for the Senate?

In those cooling links I list above, I have found some worst than that. Also, that will give you room for the deepfreeze unit you might need. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Cool the interior and heat the room it is in.

Train that was very good. She would fit in perfect. Maybe she should just have her husband run for president....
Anyways, The PS from the Compaq wouldn't work, connections were wrong. So, I took the Emachine apart that I have borrowed. It is the same PS, except a few connections less. It worked. I am using the HP now, Have to say that I have been worried after a few on the win/98 forum told me that it may have hurt the MB or HD. NOthing hurt that I can tell.
What do I need to look for in the Bios? I have seached around and can't find anything about the MB. THanks for all your help, I do appreciate it.....
Bistro, that one should keep you busy for awhile.....

Go into bios and if it is like my Compaq, the info will be across the top of the screen.
That is if you do not see it while it is posting. Just before the memory count. Do no forget the Pause/break key so you can write it down during post.
See if one of these ideas work Dodge.

Stil a no go. I followed your directions and all it comes up with is Phoenix. Do they by chance make a MB. Just curious. Cant find any info on anything about the MB in this stupid thing.. Starting to get frustrated at it. Other than that, still a good PC....
EDIT
I think I may have found it. (Some what) I think it is an ASUS.. I found the number on the MB it is MEW-VM.. Cant find it in particular, but Asus has some that are very close. Closer than anyone else that I can find so far....

They evidently have it hidden somewhere/somehow. Frustrating is right.
I wounder if someone in 98 would be able to tell us how to unhide it.??
Can not get my hands on a hp either!!! Hid behind the logo? Just guessing and hate being beat.
Sorry dodge, I had my hopes up tooo.

Train, I edited my post above just as you were typing. I found the numbers I think. They are MEW-VM, ASUS is the only one I can find that comes close, but cant find the exact number through them.... Still looking though...
Is that the correct # that I needed?

Hi all. Well got my second HD back from the shop. Not new, second hand, no literature, but it has been tested for me, so I know that it works. Put it as slave to c: as thats what the man in the shop said.
However when I turned the PC on, I got this message;
PRI MASTER HDD ERROR
SEC. SLAVE DRIVE ATAPI INCOMPATIBLE
RUN SETUP
Press F1 to continue.
I tried turning it off, then turned the ribbon around. OK this time, I didn't get that message, it booted fine. However, no new HD was found. Shut down and went to SETUP.
Went to AUTO-DETECT HARD DRIVES.
Nothing found.
Any suggestions?
