greenegoose, can you explain to me what Overclocking is exactly. I read about it all the time. Thanks....
------------------
Please remember to let us know if it worked or not...JJ
-
Dodge
Ain't goose, but here goes.
Overclocking is adjusting various settings to make the cpu [ sometimes the motherboard] run faster than the factory setting. In other words you have a Intel 866 and overclock it to make it run at 904MHZ. Hope this helps. By the way you can underclock also. Say your mobo/cpu is unstable you can underclock to stablize them. A lot of computer manufactors have been known to do this.

Hi Dodge, This comes from a favorites of mine.
Overclocking refers to the process of running a processor at a higher speed than it is marked. In other words, because processors are "overdesigned", they can run at a higher speed than their rated MHz. Thus, it is possible to operate a Celeron 300a CPU at 450MHz, a Pentium II 266MHz at 350MHz, an Athlon 700MHz at 800MHz, etc., and many CPU's can be overclocked by simply altering motherboard jumper or BIOS Setup settings
Dodge, sometimes you can find a processer that is higher rated than what it says on the box, then you're really in luck.

It would appear that the DELTA threads, like a black hole, have drawn me in. I require the input from you builders of infernal machines. Mine is starting to show some ominous signs so I want another. Not quite ready to build, but lets say I am wanting to spend no more than $1000 US for a whole new system. I already have the following:
30GB 7200rpm WD HDD
speakers
printer
32MB stick pc100 RAM
mouse
Here's the catch...I want a 1ghz, fully upgradable mid-tower and a 17 inch monitor. The real kicker is I have NO operating system to install. I have fading hopes to get win98, but will accept winME. Can this be done without using junky stuff. It doesn't have to be top-of-the-line either. What do you guys think? Can it be done or do I have champaigne tastes on a beer budget? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
PS: Dumb it down guys...I don't know hardware too well and I just started my third beer. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Hi maxx, yes I believe it can be done and yes you can bring one in for less that a $1000. You have a good start. Maybe An Inwin S500 ATX case/300w ps ($47.00), a Abit 133 Raid mobo etc. Bistro and Train will add some I'm sure. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Dodge, Try this.

maxx: Suggested laundry list: (Intel-based; someone else can advise on an Athlon-based system)--
InWin S500 mid-tower case
PIII 1 ghz CPU (Jury is still out on P4's)
128 PC-133 RAM
Abit BX-133 board (BX Chipset) OR (for a little more) the Abit SA6R (Intel 850 chipset)
Any of the Soundblaster Live! sound cards
A GeForce 2 MX or GTS vid card
For the BX board; get an ISA modem--
PCI controller-less modem for the SA6R
I'm partial to Sony monitors--but recommend looking around at a computer fair; can pick up a 17" pretty cheap--the monitor is where you will spend the bulk of your budget--try for quality if you have enough left over.

greengoose1,
That motherboard that you posted. Is that for an AMD or Intel? Also can you get a motherboard with the processor, heatsink, fan, etc. already installed? Looking to make this as easy as possible.

Bistro and train,
Thanks for lists. I posted in win98 awhile back for a place to get win98 full install. I do have a disk from MS for the second edition updates. They charged me about $24.00 for it. You guys know where 98 is still available. I really don't want to go to the on-line auctions. Just can't bring myself to trust them.

Goose, thanks for the visual aid. They do help. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Train,
That is strange. In my area, whenever a new OS comes out, the Best Buy and Circuit City people pull the old one off the shelf. I mean they do this immediately. I always blamed Microsoft for this. They are an easy target. Maybe I need to ask someone to go in the back and dust one off?
BTW, how do you guys feel about "barebones" systems? What exactly do they come equipped with? See...I told you guys would have to dumb this stuff down for me...LOL

My mobo
Bare bones and what is in them: examples
AMD type
Intel here
You could still be a victum in that they put what they want in there, not you.
Not strange, they did the same thing here, but were quick to bring back what sells.

Train and greengoose, thanks for the info. Sorry I didn't make it back last night to answer you two. That link helped. Thanks..
Max, glad you asked this question. I am going to save all this information for sure, as I am thinking about just building a new system before long and get rid of the HP. Not sure yet though, that HP has been loyal, except for the PS....

Dodge,
Yeah, I had to move up my time scale on this project. My Emachine, despite the jokes I make about it, has been very good to me. Lately, though, the usual hum it makes is sounding just a little sick. Don't want to get caught for even 1 day without a working machine. I would go nuts. I'm waiting to see if I can find a full install of Win98 first. Once I have that, it will be hardware time. Gonna try the local retailers again. This time I'm making them look for one...hehe https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ You wouldn't happen to know what I might be expected to pay for this full install version? How much for ME, if I can't get 98.
------------------
I crash...therefore I am.
-
I dont know how much the 98 are now, they were about $150.00 the last I looked, almost 2 year ago. Let me know you find one or not, and If not, I will call around here and see if I can find one for you.
Also, check out this Panda Mid Tower, I found it in a link Bistro left in another thread. Panda Cases It is pretty nice and extremely cheap.
The only question I have on it is if My Motherboard from the HP will fit. What do I need to look for, when getting a new case???

Thanks, Dodge, I'll let you know how the hunt goes. Also we are due for a computer sale and trade show in the Pittsburgh area soon. We get them about 3 times a year and local vendors set up a booth or two. I've seen some older stuff for sale sometimes.

Dodge and maxx, Train gave me an idea the other day - install 95 then 98SE - cheaper. Look in Operation Delta 28, maybe 2nd page.

Greengoose1,
That option was given to me when I posted in 98 forum. Problem is, I don't have 95 either https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ All I have is a restore disc from Emachines, that won't work anywhere else (I'm told). I know...I'm an ill-equipped pain in the a$$...hehe https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ By now, you guys are probably saying, "Does this guy have anything at all...?"
A short history lesson. About two years ago I bought this Emachine 400id. At the time, I didn't have a clue about these things. It seemed like a good deal (and to a certain extent was) but I wasn't aware enough to know about upgrading and the differences between restore, recovery and "real" windows discs. The machine was adequate until now.
There is a chance I can get my hands on a 95 version and then get the upgrade. I would prefer to have a full install of 98 laying around for future puter projects.

Installing 98SE upgrade from dos:
At the cd-rom prompt type install and it will start installing. Then when it stops it will prompt as to what it is upgrading. At this time I put floppy #1 of 3.1 in, browsed to the floppy disk, clicked ok it scanned it then asked for another floppy and I put that one in, it scanned it and resumed installing of 98SE upgrade.
with the 95 cd you remove the 98 cd, insert the 95 cd browes to it, click ok and 98 will scan the cd, ask for the 98SEcd and then it will finish instaalling.

maxx, without that e machine you woulnd't know what you know now.
You buy a licensed copy and it is good for one machine. I don't know of unliscened ones that are legal.

Goose,
I edited my above post. Don't want folks to get the wrong idea. I have a friend who has been into computers for a long time. I'm pretty sure he has a 95 version laying around. All of his machines now run 98 and ME. Here's the question...if he was to sell or give me that disc and it is not installed presently on any other machine, would this be within the legal guidelines?
------------------
I crash...therefore I am.
-
Max, I read on here awhile back that there is a place on the net where you can download the Floppy needed for win/3.1 to show as proof. Not sure if it would work or not after seeing what Train posted, but they said it would. Free and legal download....
BTW, as far as your friend is concerned. If he sells you the disk it is Illegal. If he gives it to you it is legal. Atleast that is what I have read about them. You are not allowed to Sell only give away. Also, I check your mail in a few....

Thanks for the info Dodge. To be honest, all the legal mumbo-jumbo gives me a headache. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Now I have to learn law as well as computers...hehe. I set out to play the game by the rules, but they keep making it more and more aggravating. I am willing to give them whatever they are selling 98 for, if they would just sell it to me. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Sorry, Goose, but I seem to have hijacked your thread. It shouldn't be this difficult to get what I need and want for this project. Why doen't MS just make this stuff available like a magazine makes back issues available. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Train, what I meant by that was you stated it asked for two floppy's. Awhile back that was posted here, but the site only had 1 floppy that you could download. So I dont know if you could use it to show as proof or not.
EDIT,,, Max take it easy, hurry back.. BTW, we have got to quit posting to the same thread at the same time.. We have done that 4 times today......lol
