Yes I did Fat 32

Doesn't look like you did a FAT 32 partition as Mosaic1 is asking. You'll need to go back to fdisk and choose to delete the primary partition. Then go back to Create... and make sure you choose FAT 32. That's probably why you're getting that boot error on format--won't recognize the partition. Was that on that sheet? Read carefully. No rush here, OK?

It's asking me to enter Volume label

You have 2/1/01 just before I enter for the Fat 32. It has no place to put that. Was I supposed to type that somewhere?
From the sheet:

"Do you wish to enable large disk support?
If you want to use FAT32 file system (AND YES, YOU DO), 2/1/01 and then press enter."

After your done, before formatting, post back the info you get on that drive like before---under "System" it should say FAT32.

That document I sent obviously got corrupted in the transfer, or your "old" computer screwed it up. Here it is from that point on:

Do you wish to enable large disk support?

If you want to use the FAT32 file system (AND YES, YOU DO), press Y and then press ENTER.

4. Press Y, then Enter (just like it SAID to do....)

5. After you press ENTER, the following Fdisk Options menu is displayed:

1. Create DOS partition or Logical DOS Drive
2. Set active partition
3. Delete partition or Logical DOS Drive
4. Display partition information
5. Change current fixed disk drive
(Note that option 5 is available only if you have two physical hard disks in the computer).


6. Press 1 to select the Create DOS partition or Logical DOS Drive menu option, and then press ENTER.


7. Press 1 to select the Create Primary DOS Partition menu option, and then press ENTER.


8. After you press ENTER, you receive the following message:


Do you wish to use the maximum available size for primary DOS partition?

9. Press Y, and then press ENTER. This will allocate the entire drive
as one partition. This is fine for now. Later, you can add a second partition if desired, but let's get the system up and running first...

10. When it's through, Press ESC, and then press ESC to quit the Fdisk tool and return to a command prompt.

11. Now, you are ready to FORMAT the drive...Restart your computer with the Startup disk in the floppy disk drive.

12. Select the Start computer WITHOUT CD-ROM support menu option when the Windows 98 Startup menu is displayed.

13. When the A: command prompt is displayed, type format c: /s, and then press ENTER. (a space between "c:" and "/s". (and between 'format' and 'c https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

14. You will receive the following message:


WARNING, ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE C: WILL BE LOST!
Proceed with Format?

15. Press Y, and then press ENTER to format the drive. Sit back and let it go. Go watch some TV. Will take a while to format.


16. After the format procedure is finished, you receive the following message:

Volume label (11 characters, ENTER for none)?

NOTE: This is an optional feature that you can use to type a name for the drive. You can either type an 11-character name for the drive then press ENTER, or you can leave it blank by pressing ENTER. I usually name it Primary, or Main Drive. But it's OK to leave it blank.


17. Restart the system again with the Startup floppy in. THIS TIME select START COMPUTER WITH CD-ROM SUPPORT.

18. Let the floppy load up. When you come to the command prompt A:, type: D and press ENTER (to bring you to the CD drive).

19. Insert the Windows 98 CD. Type at the (D) prompt: Setup, then press ENTER. Windows will begin to set up. Have the CD Serial Number ready to type in.

OK I deleted the partition and went and looked and it is gone. Then I rebooted after esc and started over and when I get to that part it says primary dos partition already exists.

I tried it again deleting the partitions and it verified again no partition existed.

Good; it's gone. Now create the partition again as in the instructions above. Step-by-step.

EDIT: or is it gone when you get back to it?
You need to read the prompts carefully when deleting the partition--choose #1, volume label is blank (unless you named it), etc.

https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Go back and delete everything. It did not partition correctly. It needs to be deleted, then go back to Create Primary partition and LARGE DISK SUPPORT? answer YES.
When it asks for Volume Label, just hit ENTER. Take it slow and read carefully.

I looked and it says NO partitions defined.

I'll do it again now.

It did this before and then said it already existed when I tried again.
