Get proper DHCP setup, but can't connect to Internet?!

I'm trying to help a friend with his cable modem problems. It worked fine until a week ago, when he was working with MS tech support to fix his MS Money Internet problems, and now it doesn't work anymore (The cable modem is fine because I can connect with my laptop). I think the network settings are right because I've set up a zillion cable modems by now. winipcfg shows that he gets the right IP Address, DHCP Gateway, DNS Servers, etc. For some reason, he can't connect anywhere using Internet Explorer (web site or IP address), and he can't ping any web site or IP address. FTP'ing a site with Windows's basic FTP command prompt util gives a socket:0 error. Any help or ideas with this problem would be appreciated.

I know this sounds silly but have you went to internet options and checked the box that says use automatic settings. check this and post back

i have cable modem (live in australia) and when i install dhcp it stuffs up the tcp/ip adapter. you may try installing service pack 3 (if you are on win2k server)

the only way i seem to fix it is to remove the protocols and reinstall them.

well thats what the help desk tells me to do, and its seems to work. its a pain but its the only solution i have found.

I tried that sarrkazztic, but it didn't help. I'll try deleting the protocols and reinstalling them.

Can he ping his gateway?

In my case, the ISP (@HOME) made changes to their network and forgot to tell me. It took a month to sort out (calling them was worthless, someone had to come out and troubleshoot).

He can't ping anyone. I connected the computer to a Netgear Cable/DSL Router (which I know works, because I set it up with my laptopt on the network), and it can't even ping that router, even though it successfully gets IP/DNS and other DHCP info from the router!?!?

Have you check the subnetmask

Run WINIPCFG and do a RELEASE and RENEW. Do you still get an address.

Make sure that you aren't using a proxy in Internet Settings.

Call your ISP.

Also, the computer name is how @home distinguishes IP addresses. I THINK that thier DHCP will cache the MAC address. Try shutting down everything for about 1 hour and then bring up the modem, then router, then computer.
