Networking problems!!

Hi,

I have finally given up on getting my 2 pc's networked!

What I want help on is, how do I completely lose my dialup networking, when I try to network 2 machines??

I can go into control panel, network, and not even change anything, and no longer can I get online?? I have to know what is wrong before i will try it again!

Today I seen cable networking was in my windows setup so i decided since I don't have cable I would remove it! Didn't even touch my dialup networking, but lost it until I restored the registry, put the cable networking back in trying to put everything back the way it was, but still had to restore resgistry, before I could get back online with my ISP?????

So many people have tried to help me with this, but not one so far can tell me how this happens??

Please could someone, a lot smarter than me explain this to me?

ok, you have 2 pc's. you need:

2 Network Cards (one per machine)
either a Hub to connect them too, or a cross-over cable. Now, the next thing you will need to do to both machines is to configure the Network protocols.

Machine 1:
Right click Network Neighbourhood or go to Network Properties via Control Panel. Now you will need have:

TCP/IP installed
File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks

Next you will see something like

TCP/IP »» (your network card here)

double click this and give your machine an IP address (eg. 10.0.0.1 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0)

make sure the workgroup is the same on both machine.

Now repeat the above for the second machine except give it a different IP address (eg. 10.0.0.2)

also wait for about 20 seconds after your in Windows for the services to start.

If I set them up again, I won't be able to get on here to answer you! I only have 5 backups and I've already used 2 of them, I'm talking about restoring registry!

When I setup my 2 machines, I can't get online! I may have a conflict or something!

This is what I had setup before on my computers:

I got them both setup and could see them in network neighborhood.

Do you know how I changed my ISP settings by setting up this networking, like so??? I really am trying to figure this one out!!

Welcome to VirtualDr pattigirl.

Anyway I think I know what the problem is, you're confusing Windows. This will work without losing your dialup. (Don't hold me on that, but I'm 99.9% sure you won't lose it)

0. Backup that registry.

0.1. Did you do step 0 yet?

1. Delete the TCP/IP >> Network Card but leave the one to the modem.

2. Goto TCP/IP for the modem and goto Bindings. Make sure the File and Print Sharing for MS Networks is UNchecked.

3. Now add the IPX/SPX Compatible Protocol.

4. Delete the IPX/SPX Compatible Protocol that has the Modem's name next to it.

5. Double click on the IPX/SPX Compatible and goto Advanced, change the frame type to Ethernet 802.3, then change the Network Address to 7. Check the box that says make this my default protocol, then goto the last tab and make sure NetBIOS is checked.

6. Do all of the above to the other computer. I'll wait . . .

7. Set up your shares, as I think you already know how to do. Reboot as needed.

8. Check if you can see and connect to each other.

9. Dialup to the Internet goto www.virtualdr.com and say thank you for your help everyone.

10. Backup that registry.

11. Visit http://www.pchelpguy.com .

12. Ok 11 was a shameless plug but oh well.

Well I'm back and tried everything suggested and no matter what settings I use, I can't get online unless I restore registry????

Is there anyone that can help me? It seems there is a major problem and I cannot access internet if I have anything hooked up on my networking??

I got this error message after I changed the settings Tom told me too:
exception OE has occurred at 0028:C1558B83 in VXD Vip(01) 00003743
This was called from 0028:C146859A in VXD VTD1(01)+000000BA

I have tried everything I know of to setup my networking, I'm afraid its useless!

Please if someone could give me anything I can check that would be great!!

You may be having a conflict with TCP/IP.
Go to control panel - network - configure - add - microsoft - protocol - Netboui on both machines - reboot. The shared dialup uses TCP/IP, and the were some problems.

Could it be my ISP, causing this? I sent them a email asking what could cause this, no reply so far!

Make sure you have Internet Connection Sharing installed on only the computer with the modem you will be using. (The one with Win 98 SE) It must not be installed on the other computer.

On the ICS computer in Network Properties you should have:

NIC properties,
ICS bound to NIC
IPS/SPX bound to NIC
TCP/IP bound to NIC

Dial up adapter (modem),
ICS bound to modem
TCP/IP bound to modem

Protocols,
ICS protocol to NIC
ICS protocol to modem
ICS protocol to ICS
IPX/SPX to NIC
IPX/SPX to ICS
TCP/IP (home) to NIC
TCP/IP (shared) to modem
TCP/IP to ICS

Your TCP/IP (home) settings on the ICS computer should be
192.168.0.1
and subnet mask
255.255.255.0
You have these correct.

Your TCP/IP (shared) settings on the ICS computer should be set to Automatic.

Your TCP/IP (ICS) settings on the ICS computer should be set to Automatic.

The TCP/IP (home) (shared) and (ICS) should ALL be set to automatic on the other computer.

In Control Panel, Internet Options, on the connections tab on the ICS computer you should have "Always dial my default connection" checked. On the other computer you should have "Never dial a connection" checked.

You can back up your Registy by running ERU.EXE (Emergency Recovery Utility). You can restore it by running ERD in DOS. ERU.EXE should be on your Windows CD.

Shouldn't I be able to connect to my ISP by just having file and print sharing? Because I can't! Anytime I turn on networking I lose my connection!

Right now all I want to do is be able to get online and share my printer and files!

I contacted my ISP and they told me don't don't give free support! I told them I didn't need free support, I can set it up myself, all I want is to be able to connect!!

Does anyone have any ideal why I cannot connect just using file and printer sharing? I am so frustrated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I want to thank all of you for the help! I was on the phone for an hour to putergeek and he said it is either my ISP, or I need to format!! I sure don't want to format!!

You cannot connect to your ISP by just having file and print sharing. You have to have Internet Connection Sharing and TCP/IP bound to your dialup adapter and to your network cards to do that. In fact, you do NOT want to have your file and print sharing bound to you dialup adapter for security reasons.

My suggestion is to get the 3Com HomeConnect kit, which comes with a 10/100 hub, two 10/100 NICs, two 25 foot CAT 5 cables, Windows 98SE upgrade for Windows 98 and HomeClick Network Center. HomeClick Network Center does everything for you. It sets up print sharing and all the network protocols you need. It even fixes the network if you "break" it. That's what I have. After you run HomeClick on each computer, you can remove it completely and it leaves all the network settings intact. Why wrack your brain when you don't have to? Maybe HomeClick is available separately, I don't know. It's a Microsoft product.

After I got my network setup again, I installed sygate and in order for it to work you have to be able to connect to the internet and of course I couldn't! It passed on everything except internet connection and I could't go any farther with it since no connection.

I didn't know I couldn't connect to my ISP with just file and print sharing? What about people that all they want is file and print sharing, can they not connect to the internet?

I have done a lot of reading, I'm not just expecting other people to do it for me, but I guess this just wasn't meant to be!!

Patti sounds like your having problems.

Hope you haven't given up yet.

The key I think here is really to work it step by step.

1) Delete all the protocals, services, and adapters (in that order) from your system

2) Shut down. and uninstall your NIC card

3) Reboot. Reinstall your dial-up adapter
and Add TCP/IP protcol with the following
settings:
Obtain IP address automaticly
Disable Wins
Specify no Gateway
and Disable DNS

So your network at this poing would consist as follows:
Client for Microsoft Networks
Dial-up Adapter
TCP/IP

3) Reboot and add your ISP's dialup
connection and make sure it works and you
can connect and surf

4) Shutdown and reinstall your NIC
at this stage trying the local network out
by using only Netbeui this might
require you to delete the TCP/IP for
this adapter. Add file and Print Sharing
and create shares. in addition disable
file & print sharing for the dialup
adapter select the dialup adpaters
TCP/IP protocol and under bindings
uncheck file and print sharing

your network componets should now look
something like this:

Client for Microsoft networks
3com 10/100 NIC 3c509c-TX
Dialup Adapter
NetBEUI -> 3com 10/100 NIC 3c509c-TX
TCP/IP -> Dialup Adapter
File and print sharing

5) Reboot check and make sure your Dial-up
works, that your computers are seeing
each other. and move on from there
doing it step by step, so A its eaiser to
follow, be if the problem does arise again
you know exactly where and when, which
will help you or us determine why and how.


Hope this is of some help, I can provide more details if needed but for now let me cut this long winded post short.

How am I going to get my dell going again?

Patti first a helpfull tip for next time, you can make a backup of the reg your self, by typing Regedit from Start->Run

then under the registry file menu, choose export, make sure the range is set for ALL
then simple save as desired to restore,
restart in DOS mode and type regedit /c backup.reg
and you can restore the same backup as many times as needed

as far as restoring your dialup connection my pervious post upto step 3 is my best suggestion
