There are a number of choices available out there but I am unsure as to which one to select and looking for opinions on what experiences users have had both positive and negative.

Someone told me that it contains spyware and for that reason I would like to look at some alternatives.Other suggestions?
Real network has a great one www.real.com
I like FlashGet the best. It has everything you can want in a download manager. I tried Gozilla! and it is too slow (loading and downloading). I tried GetRight, pretty good too, but shareware. FlashGet is freeware but ad-supported. I think it uses one of those "spy-ad". Site below:

OR
http://www.amazesoft.com/
Both will bring to the same site.

So what is the best non-spyware freeware download manager?
Maybe none...? You get what you paid for. Peace https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

I think all of the programs listed are either spyware or add supported. If there is a free program meeting your specifications I'am not aware of it.
Someone suggested to me I use a program called Octopus available at the site listed below. Has anyone heard or have any experience with it?

I believe Octopus is spyware too. Here is a list on known spyware programs for reference:

Is there a list of non-spyware programs, and if so where (provide a link, if you please)?
There is a difference between spyware and ad supported. DAP is ad supported but puts nothing on your computer to report home like Go!Zilla and others. AdAware is a good spyware cleaning program and it has found nothing from DAP.

If you can keep your head while others around you are losing theirs then there is something you don't know.
HMMMM....A list of non-spyware programs. I doubt it because the list would be so small it probably wouldn't constitute a list. You could try this site for such a thing:

Or you can give this page a whirl and see what you can find:

slipe,
Trish-A and I were discussing this earlier. Check this thread for some info that I found in DAP's license agreement:

I would disagree Slipe Zone Alarm has stopped dap from calling home many times on my system
