IE versions
This is my first question, so I'll make it a good one.
Before I go on, the PC is working fine.
I have two versions of Explorer.exe for 95.
One is from IE4.01sp2, the other is from IE5.5sp2, forced to install with the desktop update.
They are both version 4.72.3612.1700, and 170,280 bytes.
Windiff reports that they are different. They seem to have the same contents, but in a completely different order.
The locations of the Start button tooltip and "Start" text are the same, though.
The question is, why are they different?
Is there any functional change, or is it just a programmer trying to earn his (or her) pay cheque?

Spiny--No experience but here is the list of IE versions http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q164539
It seems you have one of several sub-builds, but strange you only have that older one.

It's the right version number for IE4.01SP2, which is what you'd expect, since that's the last version of IE which ships with the desktop update for 95.
The real question is, why are two files with the same version number actually different?
Perhaps Microsoft had a bug fix, but didn't introduce it officially since they stopped supplying the desktop update.
For anyone who's interested, this forces the install of the desktop update with IE5 or 5.5:
"C:\Windows Update Setup Files\ie5setup.exe" /c:"ie5wzd /e:IE4Shell_WIN /I:Y"
