IMesh a poor substitute for Napster

You would think IMesh would have improved on Napster but i found it to be a joke. Using SPYWARE, come on. Also mp3's are given in mb's. I didnt see a time listing for music. How do you know if your getting a complete song or an incomplete? Certainly not by the MB listing. And it kept telling me i wasnt connected to the internet when i know i was. How did it think i got there and the ads would open. Napster, with the song times listed so you can check to see if it is a complete song and no spyware hid in NINE places, is still the best. And acording to CNET most of the alternatives contain spyware. It'll be hard to find a decent replacement (for music) if/when Napster shuts down.
Where is that MB to min/sec converter.....

I agree, napster is the Best. Even if they put filter for some songs, I don't think they'll have Russian and Slovak songs, that I download all the time, blocked. At least not in the begining...

carson, there isn't such converter. same song w/ different bit rate will have different file size. and that if its a "fixed" bitrate, there are also "floating" ones...

In very rough approximation, an MP3 file w/ 128 bitrate (fixed), 3 minutes long will be ~3MB.

RS...I agree with the filter thing also. If they want to block the top 40 singles or the top 200 albums...so be it. I usually look for older and different types of music. But I think by this summer they will have their pay for play version out.

Well I'll take Imesh any day. At least you never get transfer errors after 96% of the song is downloaded. Download speeds are faster to never gets down as low as on napster. Just my opinion here though. Im sure i'll get some flak though with my opinion. See Ya!

alcan4, I have to agree with you. I have downloaded over 70 so far with Imesh. No transfer errors, then have to redownload the entire song. ANd with us with the 56k modems that means alot. The sound quality is excellant. It is like playing it off a store bought CD. I would say that atleast 75% of the songs I got from Napster had skips, or just plain low quality sound.

Anyone mind letting me know how to tell if you are getting the whole song or an incomplete? (when using MB's) That was my main concern. I hate to d/l a song and find the last 10 seconds or so missing...
Actually my main concern was cydoor, Their spyware. Now if there was a way around it ???
I tried it w/o loading cydoor but it would not let me d/l. Said i was not connected to the internet???

Carson: The only way you will be able to know if the song you are about to download is the full version or not is if you know how long it is in minutes from the offset. From this you can work out roughly in Mb's how much it should be. For example, a 4 minute song @ 128 bit rate will be approximately 4mbs. If the song is in higher bitrate, then expect the mbs to be more. Now that's when it becomes a little tricky because it's hard to know if the larger number of mbs represent the song length or the bit rate it was recorded at!

I have imesh as well, and I must say it hasn't got a touch on Napster. I have to admit though, I like imesh's resume feature. However, overall I would have to go for Napster - hands down!

Thankfully, I am still able to download the songs I want from Napster at this present time so I'm not using imesh at all.

BTW, I spent the last hour or so searching for info on how CyDoor retrieves personal info by using IMesh, but what I found was just general stuff really. I did find THIS an interesting read though!

You may be right, Moxie. I've just tried searching for a few tracks and I'm getting No Matching Files Found!

I really think this is the END of Napster. The f'ing record companies have crippled Napster - such a shame - such a waste of a great service!

I'm looking for a suitable replacement, but can't seem to find a good one like Nap. Had IMesh but it is full of spyware, which I'm not going to put up with!

You guys may want to try Spyblocker with your Imesh. It supposedly fools cydoor, and others into thinking it is connecting to a server when it really isn't leaving the local machine. Go this site and read up on it. It might do the trick.
