dual boot 98se and redhat 7

This will be my first experience with Linux and I want to set it up on my test machine that has 98se on it....I am going to use partition magic to create a new partition on the drive and want to install the redhat on that partition.....I have setup dualboots before with 98se and win2k or XP but am curious to find out if the setup for linux is the same...where you boot to the 98 operating system and install the linux to the free partition and then that will automatically install the LILO partition manager...am I way off base? Any Suggestions for a first timer?

Just create the partition (make sure to make a swap partition also) then reboot the computer with your Linux disk in and lilo should be auto-installed.

Although you can create the necessary partitions with PM, the recommendation is to let the Red Hat install process create it for you. At the very minimum, two partitions will be created, / (root) and swap. I would recommend that / = 1 to 3 gb, while swap = 1.5 x ram.

And no, there is absolutely no relationship between MS Windows and Linux. To install Linux, you either boot off the Linux CD or a Linux boot floppy. Goof luck. -mk

You also might want to consider using loadlin so that you can boot using Win98se's autoexec.bat and config.sys and not bother with lilo. Since you are just messing with Linux, loadlin is probably fine.

I plan to do the same configuration shortly, do i need to make the linux partition a primary partition to boot it?

No. A Linux partition can be either a primary or logical partition, it doesn't matter which. -mk

Would it be better to let the linux partition software create 3 partitions /boot/root/and swap?

I'm putting this the linux on the same drive as the windows(c:is windows, d: is windows data, and the rest is available to linux.

I'll have enough to put the linux in before the 1024 boundary, so should there be any other problems i may encounter or should know about?

I hear there is a hda/hdb option or something that is important to know about....what is this?
