Bought an old 486 for a friend and trying to install Windows 3.1.
It installed fine but on bootup it can't find the HIMEM.SYS.
I know it goes into the Config.sys as "Device=C:\dos\himem.sys" but I can't get into it. I type out C:\edit config.sys <enter> and get "Bad command or File Name".
I try typing C:\edit C:\config.sys and get the same message.
What am I doing wrong? Am I missing a step?

Try:
edit c:\config.sys
If that doesn't work, try:
c:\dos\edit c:\config.sys
OK, tried "edit config.sys", "edit c:\config.sys" and "dos\edit c:\config.sys" (all from c:\) nothing works.
I did a "ver" from see and get DOS Ver 7.10.
Seems a bit high for Windows 3.1
Also, at boot up, I'm still getting the Win98 splash screen for about 2 seconds before the DOS screen comes up and tells the the HIMEM is missing. Could this have something to do with it?
I'm going to format the drive again and start from scratch and see what happens.

Typical disk manager playing havoc. Glad they are not necessary anymore...
You can't edit config.sys because edit is not in the path. You might also be running PC-DOS. Try "e config.sys" instead.Quote:

Or, from c:\ type dir /s edit.com and make note of the directory or directories the file is in. Then type the full path to edit at the prompt or switch to the same directory as edit.
For example:
So you could type c:\windows\edit.com c:\config.sys or cd windows and then edit c:\config.sys.Code:C:\>dir edit.com /s

If you are running PC-DOS then HIMEM.SYS would be in the \DOS\ directory, as would E (the PC-DOS text editor.) You can use the dir /s trick to find those files, as well.

As you found out, Windows 3.1 wasn't designed to be installed over Windows 98.

After the FORMAT, install MS-DOS and then Windows 3.1.
I would have liked to see the full output of the VER command, myself. That "MS-" or "PC-" prefix to "DOS" would have told us a lot...Quote:
