I need to free up some room on my ole Compaq. I would like to get rid of wallpapers, screensavers and someother program that looks like a dos thing. How would I do that? I was thinking about some things in Wini.ini files that I don't have like Excell and something called Write but I am afraid to erase anything from there. Would it hurt to erase these items from Wini?

In the Control Panel under desktop, you can set the Screensaver to none. You can then delete .scr extension files. However these are generally not bery large and won't help you a lot.
Specify the other program or files you want to delete and some may be able to help you. There are a lot of sound files .wav that may also be installed which you might want to get rid of.
How big is your hard drive and how much is used? There are other techniques such as Doublespace/Drivespace, which some here are very much against. But these can give you more effective space.

I have 120,971,264 bytes on HD, 50,104,000 bytes free space. So would this be 120MB and 50MB? Duh. I don't want to put my screensaver in none mode, I want to exnay them. I have about 15 of them on the HD. This old thing is not as easy as my Win98 where I can find the folders and delete them. It's really a process. I'll try what you said and see what happens but like I said, I am going for more HD space.Anything else you can think of to clean up the HD? Thanks

It would be necessary like Dennis said to go into Control Panel and set screensavers to 'none'. Then like he said delete all files with a *.scr extension. Some screensavers have *.dll and *.txt files also. It would be prudent to get the files name of each *.scr file, e.g. 'marquee.scr' and find all other files with that name. Please stay out of the Win.ini file. 'Write' is the word processing program.
'File Manager' gives you about the same interface that Explorer gives you.

I went into a find window and it couldn't find any .wav or .scr files. I also used the *.scr like in Win 95. It found none. I did find alot of Dll files. Now those Scr and wavs would be under Windows, right. I have put my SCR on none by the way. So what's next?

I also have this thing called RBase 5000 that looks like a Dos window. What is this thing and do I need it and can I safely delete it? All I can get to do is show me Keyboard movements and that's about it. How about this Norton Desktop? Did you know about this? What is it, can I change it, do I need it and if I delete it What Hoppins?

You made me smile when you said, "I also used the *.scr like in Win 95". That's a common DOS/Windows command. Anyhoo, did you check off the 'check subdirectories' box? when you did the find? The *.scr files may be in the Windows\System directory as I don't have Win 3.1 in front of me now. As far as the Norton Desktop thing, does it have it's own group? If so, does it have an 'uninstall' icon?
And I take back what I said about the Win.ini file, as you may have to go in there to delete entries for some of these programs. At least you could edit the file by putting a semi-colon in front of the line to de-activate it and see how the system runs.
Obviously, your best approach would be to format and re-install DOS, then run DoubleSpace then install Windows again.
I'm just curious, what do you need the extra space for? Or are you just trying to trim windows out?
Others will have more ideas.

Be careful about using drive compression. You won't get as much extra space as you think you might, and you may have problems running DOS games/progs., as the TSR takes up about 40K conventional (below 1Mb) memory. However, as your drive is only about 60% full, you're in a good position to do it. UNDOING it may be a problem later, though, as you're bound to have used up some of that extra space, and your compressed drive contents may be too big to UNcompress.

Hey Norton!! Where's Trixy?
I got to go back to that search/find thing but I thought I knew how to search for folders and documets and programs. I will look in system but I thought I looked into everything. That Norton desktop, I may have to leave that alone because I saw another Win 3.1 at school that had only Icons for a Desktop. At least I have something to look at. It's not Win9x but it has somethings to click on to do something. I didn't get any feedback on the R Base 5000 purple screen with a prompt in it. How about it guys, what is it, an alien?
I don't know anything about compression so I won't go there. I just want to get more room on the HD and maybe put a modem in it and let it go out in the world to experience life. It does have a Nic card in it though. I guess it was used in an office enviroment at one time.
This is just a hobby as my Compaq Win98 PC in the office is no fun. I want something I can learn on. Eventually I will take it to A+ school and see if my instructor can screw something up while trying to fit Win95 on it. Do you think it will fit on this guy?

Hey, just a thought. Can I find these files that I don't want in Dos and get rid of them? Of course, I wouldn't know how to do that either.

I'm thinking the Filemanager is not set to show hidden and system files. If you show screensavers in the Desktop setup, there must be SCR files somewhere.
I DOS (Windows or REAL mode), type:
dir c:\windows\*.scr /s/a
You can delete most items with the DOS command. DOS program are generally not installed in Windows except for the PIF files and Icons. So deleting them will not affect Windows. However, Windows type programs should be uninstalled so references in the INI files are also removed. Once removed, you can delete all associated files with DOS.

No body is going to desert you! We like those old boxes here on this forum! Yes you can put Win95 on it and internet explorer and that's about it!
Here's an idea....Make a new directory on your C: drive called 'Stuff'. Drag all directories except the Windows and DOS directories into it. If your Norton thing has it's on directory leave it alone also!
Then run your system. As/if you get errors along the way, bring out the related directory back to the C: drive. You may have to edit your config.sys and autoexec.bat files along the way also. If this sounds over your head, don't do it!
You can get a 14k or 33k hardware modem for a 3.1 machine. If you wait to put Win95 on it you can use a 56k Winmodem.
I have a little 486/100mhz system/80mb HD/16mbRam with 3.11 with a 14k modem. I went to www.tucows.com and got IE 3.0 and installed that, it detected my modem, installed the drivers and hooked me up with my dial-up. It's good for email, and minor browsing...Frames look bad on it. But i'ts just a backup machine in case I need an emergency download.
Search the internet for help on DOS.
