Modem compatibility?
I know very little about Mac computers, but a Mac owning friend of mine is attempting, with the advice from a MAC dealer, to use an external 56k modem (Cardinal brand name) designed, according to the enclosed instructions ,to be used with a PC. Macs are not mentioned. Are PC modems useable with macs? If yes then what would have to be configured in the computer to optimize its settings to match with the new modem. He's having problems and I am unable to help him.
Thanx.

As long as you have a cable on the modem that fits your modem port (or printer port--don't ask)plug it in.
You will need these things present on the Mac
If he's got a modem control panel, see if you can select the right modem, and set it to the right port. If it's not there, try the Hayes accura 288, it works with lots of stuff.
Make sure you know what Dialer and TCP stack hes got:
Either MacTCP or TCPIP for the stack, the stack will tell you what Dialer he has, either: ppp, freePPP, configPPP or Remote Access.
If he has config PPP or free PPP you may have to set the Modem init directly if there is no modem control panel. If he has PPP or remote access, you set the modem type in the modem control panel. I know that sounds screwy, but hey! Thats Mac sonmetimes.
If you need more help, email me: [email protected]
Include dialer, stack, MacOS version, and any other info, like network cards, fax extensions and other stuff.
