mxtask not responding
My Thinkpad 760E has for some time been running extremely slow - sometimes not responding at all. For a number of times I have now observed that this situation eases once I press ctrl/alt/del and kill the process mxtask (listed as not responding). The machine then seems to run smoothly. I've tried to find out some more about this task, but have so far not found anything which seems relevant. Can somebody come up with an idea/hint? I'm slowly getting tired of killing off this process.
Some facts: The pad is running the "old" windows 95. I tried to upgrade it once to osr2, but this failed during plug and play installation (the machine simpely froze). I therefore restored (exact copy) the c-drive from a backupdrive. The pad is equiped with the usual IBM-stuff and Staroffice 5.0 and some other minor things - not much. Normally it is placed in a selectadock II and used for controlling my telescope equipment.

Sure it is mxtask because if it is mstask this would be the task scheduler of windows that is loaded to check (and disable or remove) what is loaded at startup you can download a program called startup cop Here BTW you can't upgrade windows with osr2 because osr2 is not a upgrade version of windows but a version that needs to be installed on a clean hard drive (a so called OEM version).

Yeah, taskmanager. But what is it that it doesn't seem to manage very well. I use startup cop on other machines (a nice piece of software), and in addition to that I also use a sort of startup cop in the form of Fix-It utillities - it works the same way. Maybe this is the problem - I'll have a look into that...
Correct, OSR2 is an OEM version, but it is still possible to do an upgrade with this version. I've done it 4 or 5 times now. Best of all, it's with Microsofts "blessings", as long as you obtained the CD in connection with purchase of other hardware (fx. a new diskdrive)...
