Check this out!!! Do you wanna speed up your Boot Time???

Hi all, this is for ALL of you!!! dunno if this has been posted b4, but just thought i'd share this b'cuz i know u'll like it... (and i've also seen a few posts relating to slow boot and shutdown times, my PC (the Celeron) was 1 of them)

Its an offical Microsoft program to speedup your boot times, i tried it and it reduced my "official quoted boot time" quite a lot on 1 of my PC's...

PC1 (celeron300a 256mbRAM with loads of startup apps and other softwares installed) from 58.26secs to 41.92secs (and it also made the shutdown process take about 10secs less too)

PC2 (AMD850 512mbRAM running lean for max performance) from 27.08secs to 23.29sec (i put this small difference to the fact that theres nothing i added launching at start-up and only a hand full of programs installed as of yet (plus its obviously a much faster PC), so it should be fast anyway)

Download "BOOTVIS.EXE" and do the following...

Step1: BootVis works in 2 steps (no installation is required.) Simply run the .exe file (from an empty folder preferably):

First use BootVis to analyze your system:
Terminate all programs running on your computer, since the program must restart your PC.

Select File -> New -> Next Boot + Driver Trace. Then a new window, which you acknowledge unchanged with OK, A new window opens in which a countdown for the restart runs.

After its rebooted the program starts-up again automatically and shows you your current boot time... make a note of the times to compare to afterwards.

Step2: In the second step BootVis optimizes the boot process of your computer. In addition the system must be rebooted again.
Therefore terminate all running applications. This process might take up several minutes (well it did on my celeron anyway).

Select Trace -> Optimise System. A new window opens in which a countdown for the restart runs.

After its rebooted a window will pop-up until its done, this is the optimising part...

When the window closes reboot again... and then u can run Step1 again and compare to before you optimised!

so in my case anyway it seems either the slower the PC, or more likley the more thats running at start-up, the more difference u get from this! IMO i think its the type of program that needs to be run now n then (say after installing loads of stuff etc) like u would with a defrag...

Where exactly does it show you the boot up time, I have tried it twice, and man is this program slow.

The only time I see is the display time, and in this box it says 18. So is my boot up time 18 seconds? if so I don't need this program, if the time is displayed some where else tell me where.

Hi m8, according to M$ "the PC is concidered booted when u can use the desktop icons" (obviously not completly finished tho IMO)... and it measures the official time to that point...

This particular quoted reference time is displayed on top of a vertical bar about 20 to 40ish secs along the graph (depending on time obviously) by hovering the mouse over it or clicking it, and the overall times are along the bottom... scroll to where theres no activity at the end and u'll see the total time aswell (this also got shorter on mine but i didn't make notes)...

Ok, thanks, it says Boot Done (in 32.92 sec), and the last thing to load in the Process Creates was BootVis Created at: 86.14 sec

I didn't post the final times when *bootvis* is accounted for... but i guess they're the most important really so heres mine...

On the Celeron it was 125.00secs and was optimised to 94.74secs... sweet! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

and the AMD was 77.68 and was optimised to 73.70secs... not much improvement but as i said theres nuffin i added launching at startup anyway!

i tried it in my win xp pro, it didnt help one bit
before the time was 103 sec

and after optimization it was 102 sec not much of a difference huh?

i have a athlon xp 1700+ with a gigabyte kt266a mothermoard and 256mb ddr ram and a 40gb barracuda

i exactly followed the 2 steps, should i do anything else??

Boot Time

I have an Intel D850GB board, 1.4 Gig CPU and 512 RAMBUS.
Original boot time was 1 min. 40 secs.
After Bootvis boot time is 38 secs.
Great.
BTW what does the "vis" stand for, and is this program only for the XP family??????????????????

that is a huge improvement , mine didnt change a bit

maybe it works better in intel computers than AMD

did u just follow the 2 steps or did u do something extra?

Lotus Astra, Thanks for the heads up, Boot time decreased from 83.83 to 44.14 secs on a o/c 1.0Ghz Athlon. I thought I had tweaked mine all I could!

boot time?

I have a question. When you clock boot times are you timing from the end of POST all the way to the XP log on screen?

From the moment I power on the PC to the moment the log on screen appears is approx 23 seconds flat. But it breaks down like this...

-power on
-blank screen (10 secs)
-XP splash screen to log on screen (13 secs)

Is that good timing? I'm assuming the blank screen portion is the POST....although I don't know why I don't see a POST or logo screen of some kind. That doesn't sound normal.
