What was your fresh XP install size? Do u have Standby &...

Hi all, I have noticed that the fresh install size of XP on my 2 PC's are different...

On PC "1" the install size is just under 750MB and on PC "2" its about 1.1GB, i find this quite strange!

PC "1" (750mb) is an Celeron300a and does not autoshutdown with WinXP or 2K and also the standby option is missing...

PC "2" (1.1GB) is a newer Athlon850 which shutsdown properly and has standby as it should...

I think the Shutdown/Standby issues with PC "1" can be sorted out with a BIOS update if i can find one... however if i do does this mean that its gunna use an extra 350mb of HDD space just to have it shutdown properly etc, i couldn't care for standby tho...

This install size difference must be related to wether the PC has autoshutdown or am i missing somthing else...???

So to help me, What was your XP Install size and do u have Autoshutdown & Standby???

Yep onto a freshly formatted Partition, fresh install on both, i have installed it more than once as well, with same results...

Could it be that your CLUSTER size is larger on the big installation?
(Properties of the Hard Disk.)

Thx but unfortunatly nope, both XP installs are on a 2gig partition, the missing stanby is the only difference i see...

How big was your install 750mb or 1100mb? thats an unbelievale 350mb difference!!!

I noticed something strange when I checked, but haven't figured it out yet. My install is claiming 2.1g. I think the install size includes the pagefile size, and a certain amount of space set aside for, well, I haven't got that far yet, but did see a figure of 400meg for something. The folders total about 670meg, but disc usage says 2.1g used of a 3g partition. The hdd is a 40g. The full size of the hdd may have something to do with it.

The install size difference could very well be effected by your RAM. If you have less ram in one machine, you will require more virtual ram, thus taking up hard drive space. This is the only thing i can think of that would effect the install size. The autoshut down problem might be due to the type of motherboard you have. If it is an AT then it will not auto shutdown, only ATX will allow you to do that. I hope this helps. - Curtis

thx all, "PC1" has 256mbRAM (384mb swap)and "PC2" has 512mbRAM (832mb swap) but i forgot to mention... on both the PC's i have moved the pagefile(swapfile) to the second drive... (a search for "pagefile.sys" on PC2 only finds 1 file on the correct drive as it should)... so i don't think its a ram/pagefile issue!

These install sizes apear the same when checked from under both WinXP and 98...

I also disabled the Hibernation feature which creates a file on the install drive the size of the RAM... (don't need hibernation on a desktop PC anyway).

On the whole install drive the biggest file is 74,902KB called "DRIVER.CAB", other than that file there are no more files over 15mb on that drive at all... i would expect to be finding bigger files than this really to take up 350mb of space, lol.

so both PC's are configured the same way, the only differences that i know is only in the hardware types (& standby/auto-shutdown)

downtime, your install size does sound rather large, hopefully just the Swap or hibernation making it that big...

The PC shutsdown OK on Win98, and lol, i dont know the difference between AT & ATX but have always wondered? but i guess cus 98 shutsdown then its ATX? Not sure if the MOBO supports ACPI or not...

Quite strange really init, hopefully someone else with a broken autoshutdown feature can confirm that their install was only 750MB too.

I really dont know why the install sizes are so different, its beyond me! i'm just guessing almost. hmmmm, what can it be?

Well, my pagefile is 768 megs, and the recycle bin has reserved 10%, another 299 megs, that's getting much closer to the install folders report. Are both install partitions the same size?

Hi, yes both both install partitions are the same size (2GB)(FAT32 only on all Drives!)... i highlighted just the "Documents And Settings, Program Files & Windows" Dirs and got these sizes 1.02GB (1,118,986,240 bytes used, close to 1.1gig as i get in the properties of the whole drive)

BTW: i don't think the 10% "Reserved Recycle Bin Space" counts as being used space... or at least it never did in Win98... but i didn't concider that 1 b4 so thx m8. it at least rules another option out! we'll get to the bottom of this in the end!

I have found the source of the problem, on PC 1 the folder "dllcache" in \WINDOWS\system32\dllcache is only 8MB and has 27 flies in it......

but on the PC with shutdown/standby working its a whopping 365mb... and has 2202 files in it, they are DLL's and EXE's & SYS files, and more etc

How big is your "dllcache" folder? as this is the root of it!

Yu might be able to delete the dllcache in sfae mode BUT you will not have restore/recovery any longer ....at least it will not fuction.

Mine is 58 megs.

I have the "System Restore" feature turned off anyway... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ but i found that it put its backups in "System Volume Information" dirs on each of the partitions, which i deleted after turning it off too... are we on about different things maybe? i'm confused by your answer b'cuz the "dllcache" dir sizes are vastly different on each PC.

as the dir "dllcache" has the word "cache" in the name does that mean it is tempory?

1 other difference i just remembered to tell u is that on the pc with the small DLLCACHE dir... XP is installed as the only OS and its on the C: drive... (i reghost to 98 if i need it, for the moment)
