Why does everyone else have my files?

Why are my Temporary Internet Files being copied to many users' profile directories on our Primary Domain? We have NT Servers with NT 4.0 Workstations, using Explorer 5.5. We use a proxy server also.

These files are located on my c:\WINNT\Profiles\MyName\Local Settings in a Temporary Internet Files folder. The exact same files located here get uploaded to \\PDServerName\ProfNT\TheirName\Temporary Internet Files.

When I delete them locally, they automatically disappear from their directories on the Primary Domain, so there's some live connection. I've also noticed my History in their profiles.

Why, oh why?

It's an explorer illusion. Map a drive and view the same folders using winfile.exe or a command prompt.

They show up in File Manager when the View Hidden/System Files option is checked, so they appear to be real. They also show up when a drive is mapped; and I can view them on the Primary Domain server. Not only that, but these files get downloaded to the individuals' machines when they log on so they'll keep getting passed back and forth to the server until they're deleted. (They were supposed to put a command in the login script to stop the temp file uploads, but apparently it's not working.)

Forgot to mention, they reside in a further sub-directory called Content.IE5 and then broken down into weird groups with names such as Cnq68eb9, etc.

Had the same thing happen to me time and time again when I would map to user's directories or local machines and view their temporary internet files. Don't know why it happens but it does. As Prince said, its an illusion. I can't believe those files are actually being uploaded to those remote machines and directories.

relax, those files aren't actually in the other users profiles, or on the other users computers. you'll notice the same effect with c:\winnt\fonts. and the internet history folder

these are system folders, they aren't normal folders, when you double click on someone elses temporary internet folder, it actually points you back to your own computer, so even though you are mapped to someone elses drive you are really looking at your own computer. it's kind of like a variable, when you open someones elses font folder through a mapped drive, it tells your computer to open the systemfont folder, it doesn't realize you mean on the other persons machine. This is why you can't add fonts to someone elses machine via a mapped drive
