Faultlog.txt - tried to create it with registry file but it wasn't created - now what

Hi,
I was reading a post and it gave instructions on how to make a faultlog in Windows. I thought it was a good idea, so I copied it into notepad and then merged it into my registry. The only problem is it didn't create the file. My pc seems okay, but I'm wondering if I did any harm to the registry and where that file went. Here's what is in my notepad file (I copied it)

"LogFile"="C:\\WINDOWS\\FAULTLOG.TXT"

I saved it as Faultlog.reg, type *all* files.

When I search on "Find" for faultlog I get two faultlog.reg files showing (one is a shortcut) but there is only one .reg file on my desktop.
Does anyone know what happened and should I do a scanreg restore?

Nancee, go to Start and run regedit

Click in order:

+ Hkey_Local_Machine
+ Software
+ Microsoft
+ Windows
+ CurrentVersion
FAULT

Is the FAULT subkey there? And is the entry with the path statement in the Right hand pane?

I'm not sure if the actual file gets created until there is a fault to log.

By the way, anyone who has TweakUI installed doesn't need to do the "patch". The option to enable or disable fault logging is available through the Paranoia tab.

You don't need to do a scanreg /restore.

The only thing you did is create a new subkey named "Fault" in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion that includes a value called "log file", so you know exactly where it is.

It's not as if your registry is all messed up...

Why not go and check whether it is there, in order to make sure you properly entered the regfile.

If you like, you could delete the little folder (subkey) called "fault" itself, as it's been created especially for this purpose.

But let's not do that just yet. It can't do any harm sitting there anyway.

The Regfile tells Windows to log errors to a file faultlog.txt.

What I did myself, is not only execute the regfile, but I also created a new, empty Text document in C:\Windows called Faultlog.txt, as I was not sure whether the reg file would actually create the file itself as well.

So I recommend you create the text file as well, and see whether Windows will now log the errors to that file.

I checked the registry and it's in there!
I know how to create a new folder, but I've never made one in Windows. I know I have to right click and then pick "folder" but where exactly https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ do I click for it to be in Windows. (I've only made folders in the root of C, in My Documents and on the desktop.)

Rog could be right in that you may not even need to create the textfile, but it can't hurt if you do: Windows will just use yours.

Just open your Windows folder (C:\Windows) in Windows Explorer, do a right mouse click in an empty area of the folder, and choose New > Text document.

A fresh Notepad window will open.
Now just go to File > Save as, and save it as Faultlog.txt.

That's it.

Thanks so much Tony. I just created the file. My notepad didn't open though, I just had to type in the title in Windows Explorer.
I appreciate your help very much.
Do you know if this file will also log Fatal exception errors? (just curious)
