On a new computer I'm having 98SE installed. What is the most stable IE with 98SE? 5.1 - 5.5 - 6.0 ? And service packs 1, 2 or not ?
Thanks,

Go with IE 6, and go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and get the Critical Updates often.
Mandatory (get a firewall of any brand) - Get free Zone Alarm personal firewall anti-hacker countermeasure from http://www.zonelabs.com. (not the ZA Pro demo) Don't let anything out to the Internet you don't know what it is.

Thanks Styx. I have ZA on my CDRW ready to put on First. Was thinking IE6.0 was more for WinXP. (?)
Been using 5.5 sp.1. But think 5.1 may have been a little better. But then I'm asking because I really dont have the experience and expertise to know.
Thanks again.

I'd be leary of IE 6. I installed it and everything was fine, except one thing: IE6 has a lot of holes in its security, but there are patches for it. Here is the problem-the security updates did not recognize IE6 as being installed on my computer. The version showed IE6, Belarc advisor showed IE6, but I was unable to patch the holes. After hunting for solutions on the net all I found was that the problem was not just my computer but it showed up on systems using windows xp where IE6 IS the default browser. I finally had to do a format/recovery to get rid of it. I won't go back to it. Just my $.02.

MS has had a comprehensive security patch dated march 28th. that covers all you've mentioned, however no 98 5.0 series.
mach.
Mach2, I take it you are refering to rebbasser's problem?
Care to offer any advise for mine? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Hi Carson,
I have Windows 98se and I installed IE6 in January. I haven't experienced any problems with it (except for the error reporting tool, which I disabled with a reg file).
The March 28 critical update is for IE6 and addresses a number of issues.
Sincerely, Nancee
[Edit: You should also find a critical update for the Virtual Machine to bring it to build 3805 - that's important too.]

carson, since you haven't tried it give 5.01 a go. All that's available is SP2. Same with 5.5. If you install 6.0 first it'll be difficult to downgrade to 5.01 or 5.5.
I've been using 5.01 with a browser shell called MyIE over it.
I went from 5.01 to 5.5 and back to 5.01. It reverts back to vs. 4.0 and then you have to "upgrade" it back up from there. A real pain. That is why I waited a while for 6.0. In my opinion it was worth the wait and risk. Runs faster smoother and more stable than ever. I would advise against the hardware driver upgrades offered by MS, that has caused me and many others on this board problems.
