Windows Update ,AARRRRGHHHHH!

Now can't get into Win98 via normal route or Safe mode and scanreg/restore doesn't help either!!!!!!!! I can use my Linux to alter any neccessary files(I renamed autoexec.bat and config.sys without a difference) and post here so I hope you can help.Funny thing is a friend phoned yesterday with the exact same symptoms ,but hadn't said he updated windows,I will call in the morning and confirm my guess that his was caused by MS also https://discussions.virtualdr.com/.

It gets to the desktop wallpaper and then the taskbar flashes and then nothing else.I can move my mouse and Ctl+Alt+Del shows nothing listed I'm gonna try a bootlog.txt run and read it via linux and see what it says.

Could this be a similar problem to yours?
Sorry but this is a long story. Yesterday I went to Windows Update and downloaded and automatically installed the latest MS Security Patch then restarted my computer as prompted. I'm running the United Devices Cancer Research Agent and decided to check its progress, that's when it all went wrong.

I couldn't close the UD Agent, had to click C-A-D twice to restart, this was very slow. Each time I restarted I could only do one action ie I would click on a Drive icon and it would open slowly but I couldn't then open any folders in it and I couldn't close it. I tried to click on my ISP desktop icon and a pale image of the icon attched itself to my cursor if I then clicked on the desktop it had moved the ISP icon. Trying anything I managed to get to Display Properties and found all the items on Background constantly rolling. I clicked on C-A-D to see what was running and found that if I clicked on anything the highlight colour jumped to the next item.

I restarted several times by using the Restart button as I found the main On/Off button wouldn't turn off the computer. Then managed to shut down by pressing the ON/Off button during the restart process. Left the computer off for a while then restarted but still had the same problems. I have Go-Back so decided to do a Drive Revert at startup, did this twice taking the computer back to several hours before the download but each time the problems remained! Then did a third Drive Revert to just before the MS download and was surprised to see that I could now go online.

Found that the Drive Revert had messed up my UD Work Unit and it was blank and wanted to go on online. Went online and got new UD W/U and to my surprise all is working well, all problems gone. I went to the Windows Update site and confirmed that I hadn't now got the new patch installed so downloaded it again but this time to my HD and its not installed yet.

Anybody any idea what went wrong? Was it the MS patch or the UD W/U or a combination of both. I've done a complete computer check with NAV with negative results. This was the first time that I've ever experienced anything like this and would like to avoid it in future. Thanks for your patience in reading all this!

Mine was also the Security patch ,but I'm not running the Cancer software.I'm having troubles copying and pasting from the bootlog.txt file in LINUX I will try and upload it ,for those interestrd in seeing it.

I just got (well about 23 hours ago now-GMT) the latest "Critical Update", and not a bad one at that.

I was paranoid this one would only wrap 2000, with IE 5.01SP2 on board, but Microsoft came through with the goods.

Hot fixed my 98 SE, took 2 attempts, but second one went well.

p.s. The 1`st READ of details said to do nothing after update (I read ALL details as I was expecting it-I knew the vulnerability existed).
However upon 2n`d attempt "the successfull one" it wanted to reboot.

Depending on which of the potential updates got installed on your sytem, for v2.6 and/or v3 (the one for v4 probably wasn't) of XML, the following files got replaced:

For V2.6 patch: MSXML2.DLL, MSXML2A,DLL, MSXML2R.DLL

For V3 patch: MSXML3.DLL MSXML3A.DLL, MSXML3R.DLL

Even though the MS write up says these files are in the Windows\System32 directory I think they really are in the Windows\System directory (or can be). If you have backup copies of the original files you had (before update) you can try substituting them back in. If you don't have copies you should be able to get them as part of the MS MDAC download (there in the package).

I do have MSXML3.DLL MSXML3A.DLL, MSXML3R.DLL
in my windows/system folder.There is also MSXML.DLL MSXMLA.DLL, MSXMLR.DLL but renaming them MSXML3.DLL MSXML3A.DLL, MSXML3R.DLL
,didn't work(thought I'd try).previous to renaming SXML.DLL MSXMLA.DLL, MSXMLR.DLL ,I renamed MSXML3.DLL MSXML3A.DLL, MSXML3R.DLL with an .old extension and rebooted to the same problem,shouldn't it have sent up an error message if those were the problem files .I'll look into the MDAC ,but since I'm in LINUX not sure if I'm going to be able to get the neccessary files easily.

This morning after my UD work unit was finished, I disabled NAV (suggested in UD forum) and installed the previously downloaded MS critical security patch from my HD. So far everything seems OK! I think that I'll try to install MS patches this way in future.

Ah-ha, sorryeee, I thought we were talking about the latest "Critical Update" from Microsoft, for PC`s running Windows98/se and IE 5.01SP2 and ABOVE.

These 3 files; MSXML.DLL, MSXMLA.DLL, MSXMLR.DLL are in the Windows98...SE system folder, everything else mentioned belongs on a different forum/computer/planet...

I gave up trying to solve the prob and just reinstalled Windows,much to my surprise I didn't need to reinstall all my programs https://discussions.virtualdr.com/.First thing i did was shut down everything In my Taskbar and background and did the Security update again ,this time it worked https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Odd thing ,this time it prompted me to reboot immediately afterward ,the first time it didn't?
