sound

I reformated and loaded up everything successfully except the sound. I have a sound card but somehow I cannot seem to get windows to load up the right drivers from the d drive. Any help would be appreciated. I do feel rather dumb as I have done this several times without this problem but now cannot seem to find the solution

If you know the card's make and model you can download the latest drivers from the maker's website.

I'm having sound trouble also.I'm curious,what was the solution.

Put your sound card into d drive, go to start, run, then type in the information off the sound card and then hit ok, geez it was to simple . I was stuck on going to opening up d drive from my computer instead of the run feature. I do not understand myself why it would not open and run going that way but on my machine it would not do it.

ah, I mean the disk for the sound card, geez and I only had one six pack

1) Close all applications so you can get to your desktop. (What you see when you restart your computer).
2) Right click on "My Computer"
3) Select "Properties"
4) Click on "Device Manager"
5) If you see any big question marks ? in
yellow you have to install those drivers to make that device work.
6) or just take a look at this since you reinstalled Window 98

*** Full Installation of Windows 98se ***

Note: After you do a full installation of Win98, you will have to
install the "Motherboard Chipset Drivers" (if required), and the
Video card, Sound card and Internal Modem drivers. You need to
know the Manufacturer and Model # of these hardware items. You can
get some of the informaton you need from "Device Manager". Before
you install Win98, use the internet and visit the manufacturers
website, download the drivers and copy them to floppy/CDRW before
continuing.

Note: Disconnect all printers, scanners, joysticks, USB devices and
cables from the computer.

1) Boot from any Win98 "Startup" diskette, and reply "Yes" to enable
CDROM support. When finished you will see:
Diagnostic tools were successfully loaded into Drive D:

2) At the A:\> prompt type in FDISK (enter)
Accept large disk support, etc, etc. Since you may or may not
have a DOS partition, select to delete DOS partition, and delete
any DOS partitions. Then, create a Primary DOS partition.
Follow the instructions on the screen, and reboot your computer with
the startup diskette inserted.

3) At the A:\> prompt type in D: (enter)
At the D:\> prompt, type in FORMAT C: (enter)

4) After the format, insert the Win98se CDROM and type in E:
(If your CDROM drive is normally D: the driver letter got temporarily
bumped to E https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
At the E:\> prompt, type in SETUP (enter)
Note: If Windows installation does not start, then you may have to
change your BIOS so your computer will boot from the CDROM.

5) Near the end of the installation, Win98 will start detecting the
internal hardware and usually will not find a correct driver for it.
So, just cancel the "New Hardware Wizard" at this time when it
prompts you to find the driver somewhere else.

6) After the installation, reboot the computer one more time and go
to the "Device Manager" (Right click on "My Computer", select
"Properties" and click on "Device Manager") and check the ?Other
Devices folder.
These are a few hardware devices that may need drivers.
PCI Multimedia Device - Sound Card
PCI Communications Device - Internal Modem
PCI Ethernet Device - Network Card
Unknown Device - you forgot to disconnect an external device or it
may be an internal device that Win98 cannot recognize.

7) Install drivers (Chipset driver is always first). The chipset
driver may or may not be required when using Win98se. But if it is
required, your computer will work, but it will not work properly and
may start crashing. The chipset driver is especially required if
you have onboard video and sound. All motherboards are easily
identified by visually inspecting them. Then visit the manufacturers
website and download the appropriate chipset driver.
