HELP - I unistalled Zone Alarm and now Windows is asking for a file at bootup!!

Hi,
I need help. I just unistalled ZA and chose "automatic" and let it delete all the files it asked for. When I rebooted, I got a black screen saying "Windows cannot find device driver file to run windows..Windows registry or System.ini refers to this file...vsdata95.vxd" Then I pressed a key and it did load. I looked in System.ini and I didn't see any reference to this file.
That file was in my c\Windows\temp and right now it's in my recycle bin. But it was asking for it when it was in the temp folder.
Also, I did a find for ZA and came up with:
I.E. HKLMZoneInfo in C\Program Files
IE HKCUZoneInfo in C\Program Files
Zonedoff.reg in c\Windows\System (reg entries)
Zonedon.reg (same type)
and I deleted a ZA shortcut from disabled startup.
{Edit- Can I safely delete these??}

Also, those instructions told me to rename the file C\Windows\InternetLogs to "InternetLogs1", so I did. (There are 4 folders in there: Backup.rdb, lamdb.rd , Pavilion.ldb and ZAlog.txt) Can't I delete that whole renamed file?

I do have the instructions to manually remove it from the registry, but it's not to clear to me, so I haven't attempted that at this point (if I do, I'll have more questions).
I'm sorry for all these questions, but I'm lost here.

According to this site you can delete the "iamdb.rdb" and "????.ldb" files .

Thanks WonderingGuy. So does that mean that C\Windows\Internet Logs is a Windows file and those other two were added? Maybe I should change the name back to Logs and take out that "1" then??
{Edit - I had read that too, before I unistalled, but it said to delete those files if you weren't able to uncheck the box for load at startup. Mine wasn't checked to load at startup! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Also, this is what I don't understand about the registry edits:

~~~ What's this about subkeys and values?? I can navigate to the point of ZoneLabs. Then do I have to eliminate whatever might be below it or to the right, or can I just delete "Zone Labs" and will all the subkey and values go with it?

Plus, if anyone knows about my other questions - the Windows message about vsdata95.vxd?? Will removing that from the registry correct this? I do see mention of where that file is in the registry?

I had the exact same problem last week when uninstalled Zone Alarm.

When I got the message that the vsdata file was missing, I rebooted the computer and it rebooted itself into safe mode. I did not know what to do so I rebooted again and the computer came back in normal mode with No problems!

The next day I got a message saying there was problem with the registry and was asked if I wanted to replace the problem registry with a new one. I did and I have not had any problems since. Go figure.

I know it does'nt help your situation, I just wanted you to know that you are not alone. Good Luck!

Thanks JPS for writing. That's another thought - doing a registry restore. I don't know what to do. I was just looking around in the registry and if someone could help with this question: If I see +ZoneLabs can I just delete that or do I have to open the tree and delete things separately, because I found a few of those instances.
I also found true vector and mini lab in Run Services- instead of without the (-). So I think that has to go too.
Well, I have a lot of questions here right now:
Can I delete all those items I found in Find>Files or Folders (two were reg. files)?
Can I delete the whole C\Windows\Internet Logs folder (or just the part pertaining to ZA)?
And the question about editing the registry.

This is the key you need to delete in the registry to stop that error from occurring:

Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VSDATA95

I have installed Zone Alarm on two desktops and have had nothing but trouble. I also have it running on a laptop with no problems at all. I am afraid to uninstall it!

I will never go near Zone Alarm again, I have learned my lesson!

It sure sounds to me like zonealarm was running when you uninstalled it.
Was it to your knowledge ?

I think if it were me I would reinstall zonealarm again and make sure its
not running at all and uninstall again. If that doesn't work then you're
stuck with the hard way.
You're probably thinking....no way am I going to reinstall but many times
it works to do it that way.
There are many people here at this board that have had ZA for along
time and have gone through many upgrades of it without any problems
at all. I am one of those. I truly don't understand why some people have
problems and others don't.
It may be how they install ZA ( not shutting down Av and other apps. 1st.)
It may be how they uninstall ( not shutting down ZA first and TrueVector)

I'm not saying you did or didn't, it's just sometimes people make mistakes and then
blame the software. Don't yell at me I'm not being critical of you.

Again if it were me and before I did anything at this point, I would make a copy
of a known good registry backup just in case.

Backup the the date you know is good.
Just copy/paste into another folder
You don't happen to remember the "date" you installed ZA do you ?
Are any of those .cab files dated prior to ZA install ?
If so then maybe a scanreg /restore will work especially if you haven't
done any other installs.

Like Amthmi, I'm one who has never had trouble with ZA. I had heard that when some go from dial-up to cable, that they had trouble and had to uninstall and reinstall. I just went to cable and the cable installer had "Blackice" with him but said he thinks ZA was better. (Maybe he just didn't want to install it) I have been on cable since Jan 10th and no problems whatsoever. Sorry for your trouble but I think if you are uninstalling it, you should have Blackice or Tiny or some firewall. Just my two cents.

Smart Fellow, ZA stops more than Blackice.
Point about installing/uninstalling ANYTHING 'live'.
Shut it down completely, and check and make sure those elements which restart it are OFF. IE if you know how to use msconfig, use it to turn off the elements. Then REBOOT before uninstalling. Installing or ReInstalling, follow the same rules, always Turn it OFF, ReBoot, then install.
Another minor, little, point.
Some installs ask you if you want to reboot, always tell it NO, then restart it yourself.

I have AOL as my ISP and I *think* ZA and AOL don't get along very well. Anyway, they don't in my case.
Regarding how I uninstalled ZA.
When, miraculously, I was able to use my browser, I went to the ZA site and printed out the instructions to remove ZA.
I had true vector, minilog and Zone Alarm UNCHECKED in msconfig. But I opened ZA to be sure "load ZA on start-up" was unchecked and not greyed out. It was unchecked. So I rebooted my pc and did the uninstall.
I think I read somewhere that when things are unchecked in msconfig, some items will not be where the uninstall program is looking for them in the registry. That's probably why I found true vector and minilog in ....run services- (I did remove them and I also removed the vxd file Windows was looking for.)
But I would like to edit the registry if someone could explain the questions I wrote above

Will deleting "Zone Labs" remove the items cascading under when you click on the +?

And, is C\Windows\Internet Logs a Windows file or a Zone Alarm file? i.e., can I safely delete "Internet Logs". It has 4 folders inside. I'm quite sure 3 are ZA files, the one I don't know about is backup.rdb.

Also, I found some files in Windows Find files or folders and I would like some advice on whether I can safely remove them please.

Amthmi - thanks for the advice about the cab file. I found the rb001.cab file which was Jan 25. I copied it. It's a zip file, so how would I restore my registry with it? I guess I would double-click on it and Winzip would come up, but how exactly do I get it into the registry??? Thanks very much.

To restore the registry, type;
scanreg/restore
at the MS-DOS or DOS prompt and follow directions there.
To get the DOS prompt restart and hold down the Ctrl key, then choose "command prompt only".
To get to the MS-DOS prompt restart the computer in MS-DOS mode.

To restore a copy of the registry (a dated *.cab) file, meaning cabinet file (a windows file) that ALSO opens with winzip, that is not located here> C:\WINDOWS\SYSBCKUP, is something I do not know how to do.
