BIOS up-grade
Hi All!
Hope Santa brought you all your worldly desires?
I have a Toshiba Satellite 2100CDS laptop. (Santa didn’t bring it.) I was l was playing around with SiSandra, who told me that I could upgrade and flash the BIOS. Current BIOS is version 7.10. Went to the Toshiba-Europe site and got hold of a BIOS upgrade (7.40) for ‘all’ 2100 models.
Have unzipped it, but now what? When I hit the *.exe file, I’m told that it doesn’t work under V86 mode. What does this mean? The *.sys file tells me that I don’t have enough memory. I have the max. that the computer can take, i.e. 160Mb. No readme files. How do I ‘flash’ or ‘shadow’ my BIOS and what exactly do those two words mean?
Thanks for any help.
Happy New Year to ya’ll.

If the computer is running OK with no problems then Don't flash the BIOS, for the sake of having the latest
You can loose your motherboard with a corrupt flash. But, in order to flash you will need two files:
1. The flash utility either AWARD or AMI
2. The BIOS file itself, usually a *.bin file
Both of these files need to be on a Clean Floppy.
You boot the computer with a good boot disk to get to the A:\> prompt then flash it from there. Some actually have a bootable flash, depends on the BIOS.
The web site you got the BIOS from should also have the Flash Utility and instructions.

Just so you don't think one reply is enough warning, listen to Murf. Do not pass go and do not flash the BIOs unless you have a problem.

Hi there,
Thanks guys.
It ain't broke so I'll take your advice and won't fix it. I won't even save the files to a floppy.
Thanks for the advice.
