I need some help please. Our internet connection keeps disconnecting. If we are typing a reply or just viewing a page, after about 5 minutes the connection breaks and we have to log back on. Any idea what is causing this? Has been happening the past 3-4 days. We run 2 browsers and it does it with both Netscape and IE. What could this problem be? Thanks for any help.
Hi Penny, try this....... Start>Settings>Control Panel>Internet Options>Connections>Advanced then make sure that the Disconnect if idle and the Disconnect when connection is no longer needed checkboxes are cleared.

Well, I tried going the internet options but I do not have those items in the advanced box, or anywhere else in the internet options. They are not listed there. So now what? Thanks.
Not sure this is your problem, but FWIW you can find those settings under Control Panel > Modems > Properties > Connections.
It may be problem on your ISP's end. What kinda connection you have?

It sounds like you went to the advanced TAB instead of the connections TAB. Under the connections TAB in IE, you should have settings BUTTON and then an advanced BUTTON.
If this disconnect problem is associated with an IE setting, it is strange it would be happening in netscape also. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Ok, I went back into the ctl panel and went to the connections tab and the only thing listed there is setup, add, remove and settings, no advanced tab. I went into settings and the only advanced tab is not highlighted and it is under the proxy box. I went into the modem settings and it did have a box that said disconnect after___ minutes, but it was not checked. We use netscape for our email, not OE. We only use IE for certain sites that will not load on Netscape (like MSN communities works better with IE). So any aother suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for the help so far. We use GTE as our ISP and we usually connect from 48000 or 115000.
You said there was only 1 advanced button in settings under proxy server that was greyed out. There should be another under DIALUP SETTINGS on the same page. If there isn't, I don't know what type of IE you are using.
Anyway all the above probably doesn't matter if the same thing is happening when you are using Netscape.
GTE being your ISP, I am betting they have something to do with it, just as AOL cuts off their customers.

Well thanks anyway. But there are no other advanced settings under that box. It also does it on Netscape, so it may be GTE. We downloaded IE off of Microsofts website. Netscape came with the ISP we had when we first bought the computer. So I am not sure what it is either since we got it from their website. Thanks for your help. Will call GTE and see what they have to say.
In IE go to TOOLS> INTERNET OPTIONS> CONNECTIONS> STEEINGS> ADVANCED...& make sure the box isnt checked that says to disconnect if idle... Also if you have call waiting (on phone svc) you should disable it before you dial ISP. Sometimes an incomming call or someone picking up phone will disconnect you. There are extra settings for modems that will make it stay online for a set time after 'line noise' or carrier dies. this time can be changed. I looked for 'extra settings' string but couldnt find it. If i find it i will repost it here.
BTW, its 'possible' you have a trojan virus & someone is shutting you down, you might want to look for trojans, alot of AVs dont look for them, if you could stay online long enough i would go here & do a free online scan. http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_pcc.asp Good Luck

Thanks for your reply and I will try that and see what happens. Tried to call GTE but was kept on hold way too long.
I have used the Houscalls scan and it did find 2 of the trojans a couple weeks ago, however this just started in the past few days. We have call waiting disabled and there are only 2 of us at home, so nobody is picking up a line to use. I will indeed try your suggestions and thanks for your help.
i can't remenber exactly where the setting is, maybe someone can help w/ that, but there is a setting in your modem preferences or something like that that; says "only connect at **,**** speed."
if that speed is set higher than the actual telephone connection can sustain then you will be disconnected.
otherwise if it's an idle time thing, train had a very good solution.

Thanks onedaddycat. I think the speed is actually set higher. we were talking about that last night and someone told us to set it high (at some point) We log on at 115200 sometimes and I do not think we are actually logged on at that speed. I will check that out also.
penneydog, the 115200 setting is the speed your computer communicates with your modem, not the speed you connect online. If you are on 56k service, 115200 is the correct setting. If you are on 28.8 or 33.6k, 57600 would be the correct setting. You can try changing it to 57600 just to see.
SETTINGS > CONTROL PANEL > MODEMS > GENERAL TAB > select your modem > PROPERTIES > GENERAL TAB. It will be listed under MAXIMUM SPEED.
There is also a "disconnect a call if idle more than ___ min" box under the CONNECTION TAB that needs to be unchecked.
Some AOL users get this false speed connect also.
