Thought i'd better start new thread incase other becomes currupt from to many posts

Heres Part 1...
Should HDD make and models be listed in the device manager?

Just cheched the box, but still same prob... exept ASD dosn't have a prob anymore...

ALSO: windows did NOT see the machine on boot before the bios was fully set up, i made sure of that, and i've also restored HDD with Ghost since to see if that helped...

With a good backup program u can UNDO (almost) all your mistakes & bad installs etc in Windows!

I've now removed ALL entries under "Display Adapters" & "Sound, Vid & Game Ctrlers" in device manager...

Rebooted and allowed it to auto detect devices upon reboot..... All detected!

but, still not fixed... what other related things cam i remove or try out? ...to save the dreded reinstall tomorrow!

With a good backup program u can UNDO (almost) all your mistakes & bad installs etc in Windows!

Have u enabled acpi in the bios.dont enable the bios power mangement.Maybe try an overinstall of win98 with acpi enabled. Read this article http://agent.microsoft.com/hwdev/desinit/retailup.HTM

Hi, i cant find "ACPI" in BIOS... only found "Power managment" which is and always has been disabled...

Thx Boffo1, i'll try an overinstall b4 i try the reinstall, thats if i cant solve this before i go to bed in about 30mins... zzZZz

Does msinfo32 show any devices under the problem devices branch ?
I'll still take a wild stab at IDE controllers. Try the intel pv2.2 again and if no satisfaction try clipping it back to 33.

according to what i found on your motherboard it is acpi ready.try an overinstall with the /pj switch. ive had good results with it.

Going to add this to the Registry from Boffo1's link

To enable ACPI after Windows 98 is installed, run Regedit and go to the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Detect

Create a new DWORD value called "ACPIOption" and set it equal to 1.
In Control Panel, run Add New Hardware and choose hardware detection. ACPI should be detected and installed. After the system is rebooted, all ACPI-enumerated devices will be set up again.

I edited my previous post so look at what i said about the pv2.2. One of the more interesting things it does (i think) is to remove drvidx.bin and drvdata.bin from c:\windows\inf You could do this manually if you want as well. Does acpi show up in device manager under system it may already be installed and were barkin up the wrong tree. At what point does the shutdown stop.

Just tried clipping it back to 33 again and retrying the intel pv2.2...

done above regedit, but didn't detect anything PnP, but just noticed that if i continue it to detect non PnP the it finds a Modem, but Modem is allready installed in device manager. i'll give that a try anyway.

Boffo1: no ACPI in device manager/sytem devices... closest thing is Advanced Power Management Support... is that the same?

Heres another description of problem for the benifit of new readers/helpers:

After the Screen that shows the Usual "IT IS NOW SAFE TO TURN OFF YOUR PC" i now get below error insted of just switching off:

If i press any key to continue then the monitor displays no signal message and the PC fan/lights are still on... If C+A+Delete it restarts as it would do...

This happens every time i "shutdown" but if i "Restart" all is normal!

but, sigh... no luck yet!

What is in your startup (msconfig) and what is starting from autoexec.bat (eg an antivirus).
If it's not there then the network is the next possiblility. (older DLC does it for instance)

Tried letting it install the found modem... didn't help...

Then i removed all modems... let it auto detect... it found 1 but did NOT install it (i'll get that back if i reghost anyway)

so any more ideas?

i'm going to bed now so i'll try any new stuff when I awake... if no success i'll reinstall to rule out problem with new BIOS update!

IMM Just incase Reinstall dont work could u tell me if this is how i restore my OLD BIOS?

I backed it up by typing "awdflash somethin.bin mysave.bin /pn /sy" and have a file called "mysave.bin" which is my original BIOS...

I think this is what i should type to restore it... "awdflash mysave.bin mysave2.bin /py /sn /cd /cp /cc" am i right?
