Should HDD make and models be listed in the device manager?

Hi all, I am trying to solve a problem in this thread THIS THREAD but my question is going unanswered so i thought i'd start a new one so u dont have to read so much...

In Win98FE device manager my HDD's are listed as GENERIC IDE DISK TYPE01 & 02... this is the same on both my PC's when running Win98 and DMA is normal on other PC, but with win2K & XP they are listed correctly by make and model etc...

just a thought, but i didn't think HDD's needed drivers so i always thought that was normal.

Can someone tell me wether Win98fe should list make and model of HDD's as Win2K & XP does? Could this be the reason why i'm not getting DMA access?

With a good backup program u can UNDO (almost) all your mistakes & bad installs etc in Windows!

In Device Manager, Settings tab, click the box to set a check mark in DMA.

The drives do require drivers, usually generic. Win98 1st Edition doesn't provide any identification of make and model either, in fact I don't find either of my hard drives so identified anywhere.

thx Ghaud, i too thought that the Generic Drivers would do the job... i didn't think they needed special drivers but my DMA box wont stay checked and i'm getting other probs described in my other thread.

I've found that whether win98FE reports the drive type (or reports a generic type) often depends on the way the bios reports the drive to windows and in many cases this will depend on whether the drive detection is set AUTO for it in the bios or whether it's been detected by the bios's detect HD routines and parameters installed for the drive in the bios.

Re: DMA not remaining checked this is often idicatative of a controller serialization problem. I won't say anything more about that until I know what the controller is. Please list the mobo and the drive. (or at least the chipset)

The drive types look wrong in any case (won't say for sure until I know whose bios) but type 46 or 47 would be a more normal type (with most bios's) using LBA (and not type 1 or type 2)

Have you looked from safe mode to see if you have duplicates?

Hi & thanx IMM, I made a mistake when i said the GENERIC DISK TYPE above, i looked on my other PC as i thought they were both the same (my other PC runs fine with the TYPE 01 & 02 tho), sorry about that.... I should have wrote GENERIC IDE DISK TYPE 46 for BOTH Drives, so i guess thats OK then?

if i look in the BIOS both HDD's r set to USER with values in the SIZE/CYLS etc and in LBA mode... so that all looks OK.

the controler is listed as: Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus master IDE controller is that what u needed to know?

I'll post HDD specs after i reghost with Win2k to have a look

i looked in Win98 Safe mode and there were 2 of each TYPE 46 & 47 so i removed them all and it reloaded back TYPE 46 again on both drives... i guess thats OK, is it?

unfortunatly that didn't sort the DMA problem...

Heres my HDD IDE Config as detected by Win2K, seems right to me.

Primary Master: Fujitsu MPC3032AT 3.2-GB - 2years old (No probs)
Primary Slave: Maxtor 92041U4 20-GB - 1year old (the drive with DMA probs)

A couple of years ago when I upgraded my M/B the hard drives were listed as type 46(like they normally are) until I went to Epox site and got the VIA 4 in 1 driver set which I installed and since then the drives are reported with their proper names.

I suggest you go to bill Selk's page on al440LX http://home.earthlink.net/~billselk/al440lx/

somewhere on my drives is a file with the bios screens for such boards
(this is the file I have,, manual al440lx), and I remember they have complicated BIOS setup screens.

you may need delve in there and try find a setting about dma.

There are a lot of possibilities but one thing you could look at to start in this case is the version of Esdi_506.pdr.

If I recall correctly ?? you'll find an updated esdi_506.pdr in the Windows 98 Large IDE Update at http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/d.../corporate.asp

I just tried the Windows 98 Large IDE Update Q243450, but did NOT cure the DMA prob.

looked for the Esdi_506.pdr file but could not be found on M$ website? i can only find above large IDE update, they want me to contact Microsoft Technical Support to obtain the fix! huh? wat r they on?

BTW: my MOBO is the CB61X with the Intel 440LX chipset...

jtdoom i looked at the al440LX page but couln't find anything specific to my problem! and also checked out the MOBO manual... interesting but not sure if mines the same tho... as its all quite technical really, lol

Topdog I don't think the via 4in1 drivers are for my MOBO... but i think u could be on the right tracks if i can find something specific for my chipset/MOBO...

[b]perhaps i should give Win2k another chance and try harder and resolve some hard-lockup/hardware issues with it and maybe stick with that as DMA works fine with Win2K.[/i]

PS. i haven't tried XP on this PC yet b'cuz i am waiting for updates for my FireWall etc to be released, as this PC is directly connected to the internet and acting as my proxy server for my ICS and is on nearly all day! its also my Surf and Download machine so security is important!

FE did not do as well with ACPI plug and play as the later versions.

what if...

what if you try THIS for win98FE
setup /p j

(forces ACPI support to be enabled in 98)

and, it may help if you move a card to another slot...

We have virtually identical motherboards and device manager setups. WinFE too.

I have no problem with DMA remaining checked. I'm not sure if you've verified the primary ide controller driver as being:

c:\windows\system\iosubsys\esdi_506.pdr

That's what I have in Driver details in the Device manager. It's version: 4.10.1998 (Find Files>right click>properties>version)

From what you've said - the drive should be fully capable of DMA. (I didn't notice whether or not you've looked at bios upgrades)
Have you searched for NOIDE entries in the registry (or run noide.inf from the Win98 CD)?

Another thing you can try (if you don't mind moving to Intel busmastering stuff) is to run this one for the LX chipset http://developer.intel.com/design/so...atform/440.htm
4-in-1 dirvers are definitely not for your mobo but these are.

It will change your Intel 82371AB/EB into a Intel 82371AB/EB/MB controller - but you can always force it back to the original windows ones from Device manager if you don't like the change.

What version of bios does the boot report (Award 4.50 or 4.51PG etc.)
With some awards there is trouble with newer drives and DMA recognition. The answer then is to clip the drive to DMA33 with a tool from the drive manufacturer.

i just got home and its late so i'll have to leave it for now... however after having a reading the above posts and a look at the links it does look very promising that 1 of these methods should work... but does look like a lot for me to take in tho, i'll see how i get on a step at a time.

Rog My "esdi_506.pdr" is in that folder too and the file version is "4.10.2186" and the product version is "4.10.1998"... i'll try that link u gave me later tommorow.

IMM i've looked into BIOS updates a few months back and found 1 available but i was afraid to try it as i thought it would be incompatable with my possibly OEM version of MOBO... i'm still not sure, i'll have to try and find it again...

The BIOS Version during boot report is: Award 4.51PG.
