In Preformance, typical role of computer

I have been searching for information, without luck, about selecting "network server" for typical role of computer.

System Properties => Preformance => File System => Hard Disk tab, in Settings, Typical Role of Computer, select Network Server.

This is suppost to increase access time or some improvement. I would like to read about it, but have been unable to find data on it.

i have also read about this somewhere (cant remember where)that if you have more than 64mb of ram then it makes you comp quicker but if you have powercut or dont shut computer down properly then you lose data.

Many of you are aware that performance can be increased by changing the typical role of the machine from Desktop Computer to Network Server in Control Panel>System>Performance>File System>Hard Disk>Typical Role of this Machine. Powerful Pc sets the name cache at 4000 files and the Directory cache/Path cache at 128 directories.

To setup this tip, you can either enter the info manually, or create a regfile which can be saved and reused after each 9x reinstall.

1. open notepad and save a new file as Powerful.reg. [When you are in the save as window, type powerful.reg in the "filename" rectangle, and change to "all files" in the "save as type" rectangle.]

2. Copy the info between dotted lines below (starting with Regedit4)and paste it to your file.

3. Close your file and double-click on it.

4. Go to Control Panel>System>
Performance>File System>Hard Disk>Typical Role and select Powerful Pc. Reboot.

You can do all this and much more with Cacheman, a free program. It lets you vary these settings and others (if you want to experiment) without your having to go into the Registry or System.ini files and it will restore your original Windows settings at the click of a button and a reboot.
I, however, just use VV's Powerful PC for my settings and click on Cacheman occasionaly to view my resources, physical ram, virtual ram use, etc. You can find it here:

I have done the same as dckrt8 had suggested a while ago... seemed to help. although you can customize it as I did & change the 'role' name to something like (for dckrt8.. put "dckrt8's BAD A** PC" in after the "@=" where it says "Powerful PC". Kinda kool huh? anyways the hack dckrt8 shows does seemed to work for me.. Good Luck MrDish
