Direct Cable Connection

I am trying to connect my laptop to my desktop via serial port with a serial cable. Unfortunately, they will not communicate.

Any advice on what I am doing wrong? No difference if I make the laptop Host or Guest. Can't tell if they are even transmitting via the port.

Also, I only have one COM listing in Device Manager for my desktop, but I have 2 physical serial ports. How come I only have one COM listing? (COM1) I have 4 COM's for my laptop and it has only 1 physical serial port.

BTW, I'm using a Direct Cable Connection DB9 Female/Female Serial cable. It says it is for PC to PC file transfer, and the picture shows a desktop connected to a laptop.

Laptop is an IBM 600X.

You ned to use a special cable called a null modem cable. You can probably get it at any computer store or electronics department or have an elctronics technician build one for you. It would probably cost about $10.00.

First off ,what software are you using .I used laplink at one time and have it on floppy somewhere not sure if they have free one anymore. Second is the serial port enabled in the bios,i personally disable both to free up resourses as i dont use serial ports anymore.

The cable carton says:
"This cable can be used as an Interlink/laplink cable, or with the Windows 95 Direct Cable Connection software program. This cable has crossed "null-modem" wiring design"

The COM was disabled in the bios, and I enabled it. Thanks.

Any other Ideas?

I read in the article, that you cannot use DUN and the DCC at the same time, unless you enable VPN.
I use RASPPPOE for my DSL connection which uses DUN. Any Idea on how to enable this?

It doesn't work if i shut down the DSL. Would I need to remove it?
