Reinstalled Whatsapp and lost Contacts

They are supposed to be still there and recoverable but every instrction set I found either doesn't work or an option in the instructions doesn't exist. The phone is using Android 11, maybe I keep finding procedures for earlier versions.

Dr.Fone looked promising by Wondershare, but it couldn't see my laptop and it misidentified my phone.

Does anyone know a fool proof method of recovering Whatsapp Contacts after reinstalling? (I'm aa good fool)

Perhaps reinstall with an earlier version? Looks like they update frequently...
