First log on I use the keypad on laptop (right side) to log in ok.
but if I am typing in a code or something else later , I have to use the top row for numerals ..
why?

Does pressing the Num Lock key help?
Microsoft has their own ideas of how the numeric keypad on your computer should work. Their default is for Num-Lock to be Off.

Also, you will find that if you press Shift and then a 0 on the numeric keypad, you will not get a 0. This is because Microsoft thinks that there are still people working who use the old DEC VT-100 cursor key functionality of the numeric keypad in 2024.
