What does it all mean?

What ho one and all,

On the basis of 'if it ain't broke, don't' fix it,' my Firefox decided to update itself and of course, everything has gone AWOL.

Am am trying to rebuild the screen with all the bells and whistles that I know and love.

Because I hate all the pop-ups that appear, I have AdBlock Plus, but also FlashBlock and NoScript. I can add buttons to the toolbar 'Revoke Permission', 'Allow Script', 'Allow JavaScript', 'Toggle Java', 'Temporarily Allow Script' etc. But I really have little to no idea what these all mean or what the difference is.

I know that many BBC news clips do not play until I click in the box, so something is working. But am I over egging the pudding (so to speak?)

Remind us again of which version of Firefox you were running. Old versions wouldn't have the security fixes, so it's in your best interest to upgrade anyway. Since you plan to stay on the same version for a while, I recommend you use the ESR releases.

I replaced AdBlock Plus (ABP) with uBlock Origin (uBo) a while ago. ABP will whitelist certain advertisers, unless you change the default settings. uBo uses the same filters, but takes a lot less memory.

I don't use FlashBlock or NoScript. Can't NoScript block Flash content also? Not sure that you need both.

uBlock origin, the only way to go in my opinion.

Thanks for your reply. I was using ff 24 and whatever the security risks, it was stable and running well. I do have Never Upgrade switched to Off.

However, for whatever reasons, FF upgraded itself to 43, and that is what I am trying to rebuild. I will give UBlock Origin a try. The reason for NoScript and Flashblock, as annoying as having to renew pages to see all the information, is that I get a lot of animation and pop-ups, none of which I want. But I still don't know the difference between them (Flash / Java / etc.)

One reason I do not like upgrading FF all the time, is I find many things just do not work. I use RoboForm, was working fine under 24, but under 43, many time, it will not log-in. Have to pay (again) to upgrade RF so that it will work. And It is not easy to export RF log-on details to LastPass. (unless someone know san easy way.)

Here's a thing! With FF24, and RoboForm, I could log-in to Bt.Yahoo.com and check my Spam box.

With FF43 and an older version of RF that I have managed to get working, I get a message saying 'Your browser has refused to allow youj to log in.' Bloody brilliant. What to do now?

Have resolved the log-on issue. Have always believed that cookies / Java, etc are not ideal, but if blocked, I cannot enter some of my usual site. So have switched 'Allow' and all appears to be working (again.)

Couple of years back, I exported all my PW's from Roboform to LastPass, which is free. So are Keepass and Dashlane.

It sounds like when you upgraded, FF also did a refresh, which wipes out parts of your profile. Many complaints about this on the FF forum at www.forums.mozillazine.org.

Some things don't work with upgrades, but you also can't use most extensions with an older FF. I always opt for safety, and there are ways of getting some features to look like an older version, Classic Theme Restorer and Classic Toolbar Restorer.

I highly recommend the above-mentioned forum for any other problems, as it covers Mozilla products only. Like Vdr, many of the mods are retired or working in the puter business.
