Have always done that, wasn't sure on 8.1 if anything needed attention
I've seen various discussions about updates in win 10 that there is no control by the user? I got into a chat on microsoft yesterday and i was informed that this is not the case, you can configure the updates so you have your choice. Was on a different website.
I had been told you had to upgrade to have that option, but not so i guess.
There is definitely less control of Windows Updates in Win10. It depends on which version of Win10 you have. If you have Pro, there are a few more options.

You can uninstall and then block updates, but you can't block them outright.
