The Mouse Does Not Work
Dell Dimension E310
Windows XP Pro
4 GHz memory
Intel Duel Core 3.00
500 GB SATA HD
I powered up the computer and got the screen for my name. The mouse arrow appeared but it would not move. The mouse is USB. I turned the computer off and tried different USB ports and four different mouses with the same result. I don't get "new hardware detected" or any other message. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Are the USB ports enabled in the BIOS?
Did you look in Device Manager to make sure the USB ports are working properly? Go to Start - Run, then enter devmgmt.msc
Did you test the USB ports with any other devices, like flash drives?

Tab and Alt+Tab should let you navigate.

Also check if there is a "Legacy" USB option in the BIOS. If so, try enabling it.

USB ports enabled. I can't get to "Device Manager". Since I can't get past the "user name" screen, I have no idea if flash drives work. Tab and Tab+Alt won't let me navigate. So I'm thinking the keyboard doesn't work either. It is also USB. I didn't find a "Legacy" USB option in BIOS.

You didn't mention the keyboard problem before. The fact that you could get into the BIOS means that it's probably a Windows issue.
You can try booting to Safe Mode, but I think it would still have the same problem.
Is this a new installation of Windows? If not, you might want to try a repair install. It sounds like something happened to the USB drivers.

I didn't realize the keyboard didn't work because I didn't try it. My mistake! So I can use the XP install disk to do a repair?

Yes you can. Just follow the examples in the links.
