W7/ WMP
What ho,
Don't have a problem but wanting to understand.
An elderly neighbour had a CCTV drain survey done and the DVD she was given is in some strange format that will not play on her W7 computer.
I took it and can play it with VLC on my XP machine, so used VLC to convert and save as an AVI file. The resulting AVI plays on all the various media players on my computer.
However, on her W7 computer, it does not play with WMP. The file type is set so that WMP is the default player for AVI files. What is the secret to getting W7 / WMP to actually play an AVI file?
Thanks and toodle pip

Are you talking about the same system in this thread? The answer is basically the same.

I guess my point is, and I do understand that the correct codecs are needed, if AVI is an MS file container for Windows, why does an AVI file not play under W7 / WMP? Why would one (in this case, an elderly lady who bought her computer with all the installed software) need to install anything else to play an AVI file?

Because M$ does not want to pay for the codecs that Media player needs. So, in Win 7 it has even less support for playing videos than it had in XP.

OK, thanks. Guess it will be best to install K-Lite for her next time I am around there.
