Don't think I am alone but that does not make me feel better toward this version 8.1.
"Played" with it on a new laptop--didn't care for it. Installed the Classic Shell (latest version) and that helped greatly. If I keep the new laptop, is there a simple way back to Win 7? As always, TIA.
Provided that there are Windows 7 drivers available for the computer in question, the "simple" way to get Windows 7 on it would be to purchase an OEM copy of Windows 7 and install it. Cost for Windows 7 Pro would be in the $90 to $140 range.
Post the make and model of the laptop and we can see if Windows 7 drivers are available.
Thanks for your quick reply jd. The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite C55-B5270 and from what I have read, Windows 10 addresses this distasteful situation created my Microsoft. I further understand from reading on the web that Windows 10 will be offered as a free upgrade to Windows 7 and 8.1 users. We shall see!!

As to whether Windows 10 will solve all of Windows 8's issues, that remains to be seen. The upgrade is supposed to be free, according to currently available information, but again, we shall see. Windows 10 is still changing and evolving at present, so who knows what will finally be released and/or what it might cost.
Too many unknowns are yet to be revealed to us--let's just hope for the better. Windows 10 may not be the panacea for Win 8.1 but let's hope Win 10 will be far superior to 8.1 AND it will be free.

Put a SSD in it and install Windows 10 review and see how it does.
Maybe you might want to do the same with Win 7. If you like win 7 buy a OEM , same version, and slap the key in. Got a few days before you need to register it.
Except for Aero Glass, desktop Gadgets and the Start menu, what is so different about windows 8.1 and windows 7? I had insalled Classic Shell and, after a week or two, I found that I wasn't using-it at all, so I removed-it.
