Video Forensics - XP Pro

A long while back (I think it was in 2009), my friend told me that if I watch (from Internet) a video (such as FLV, MP4), my XP computer would hold that video in a temporary cache under my profile, somewhere within Documents and Settings.

I experimented many times, and I have found that he is right.

Now I want to try that again. But my friend is dead, I cannot ask him again.

Anyone who can give me some help on this topic?

I *think* you may be referring to Windows displaying most recent documents that have been viewed (which includes videos and pics)

You will need to refine the search depending on which browser you use.

I want to watch what I had watched from the Internet "before". (Here "before" means 12 hours ago, for example. Not to mean 30 days ago or even longer, e.g. 1 year ago).

Derp, I cannot find that temporary folder you mentioned in the Win XP Pro Desktop.

I also searched inside Documents and Settings too. Cannot find it. Cannot find AppData either.

I can vaguely remember what my friend told me - and it is very similar to what you (Derp) said because my friend explained to me the mechanics of a 'video grabber' software (such as the ones people use to download a video from places like YouTube, etc).

One more point I wish to make: I can see a whole list of 'documents'** on the start menu under My Recent Documents. (** they are more than just documents because I can see the music files I played recently too). That answers the point re Fink about turning off the 'history' archiving.

If you're using internet explorer try clicking Tools>Internet options>general tab>browsing history>settings>view files. That will show all files that the browser has cached/saved from your general surfing inluding any video files that were viewed (not all are saved though.. most streams, like Flash for eg, do not remain in cache)

In Firefox to view cache..

Type about:cache in the URL bar and hit Enter > click> List Cache entries

Enable view hidden files & folders in folder options to see it.

That's for Vista/7/8, not XP. For XP, it would be C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

You can just copy and paste the path into Windows Explorer. Otherwise you need to choose "show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" in Folder options.
