HP Pavilion dv6-6138tx
General Windows operation seems to be ok, apparently it's been BSOD'ing here and there. My initial solution was to use Hiren's Boot CD to attempt to boot with Mini Windows XP to pull the data off and use the recovery partition to rebuild the OS. Every time it trys to boot to Mini Windows XP, I get hit with BSOD 0x0000007E and acpi.sys.
So far done the following;
sfc /scannow - no corrupt files found
latest BIOS (F.1B)
HP's Memory test diagnostics - no issues found
I don't use Hiren's. If you need help with that, go to their forum. The Mini XP is "gray market" software.
I prefer UBCD as listed in my signature. You can use Parted Magic's file manager to get files off the drive. Or you could try a Linux live cd.
sfc and the HP diags aren't enough. You should run the hard drive manufacturer's diags and Memtest86+. UBCD has both.
I'm aware I can use other tools like UBCD, my point was the laptop had displayed the BSOD during a booting point independent of the Windows 7 OS. So I'm assuming it's not OS related (most likely hardware).
Hiren's isn't my concern or problem. My next step was the manufacturer's HDD diag software & Memtest86+. Hiren's has both of these.
It's possible that the drivers in the Mini XP won't work with that motherboard. That would cause a BSOD as well.Quote:

OK, I got a BSOD within the Windows 7 GUI (whilst installing some Windows updates + MSE). That lead me to uninstalling KB2670838 which resolved the issue.

I was unable to "Hide" it after uninstalling as it did not come back down. It did however reinstall itself via IE10 & IE 11; so I had to set them to "Hidden" too.
