LapTop Hibernate Problem
I just got myself a Toshiba LapTop a week ago(700mhz celeron, 128mbRAM, 10gig HDD & Windows 98SE). and have just noticed this problem today...
Within an hour of getting it i partitioned the drive into a 2gig C drive & a 8gig D Drive then reloaded the recovery CD back onto it... everything worked fine most of my programs are installed, i used ghost to back-it-up every 2 days (i have 3 backups now).
as i said i only noticed the problem today... but had restored with the ghost image a couple of days ago after trying some unwanted software to get rid of it.
Since the restore hibernate don't work anymore, insted it goes into standby mode.
I have tried all the backups i made and didn't fix the problem.
I have reformated & Re-Ran the recovery cd and all (inc. hibernate) is OK... if i then backup this install and restore it supprise, supprise, hibernate dosen't work anymore.
as u can see i've tried pretty much all of what i thought would fix it as at first i just thought it was to do with the windows update or directX etc so thas y i Re-Ran the recovery CD.
its like ghost isn't backing something up properly, but it great on my other PC's.
I've also heard of something to do with a separate special partition on the c drive for saving the hibernation files onto... have i got rid of this with ghost... surely not!
so i thought i'd ask u guys as this seems to need some expert knowledge.
Thanx in Advance all for any help. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

What's the full model number on the toshiba? Did you format FAT32? If you got rid of a special partiton on C: then it was with fdisk I'd guess. If it was something made with phdisk then phdisk has to be version 5 or greater for fat32. Is the bios phoenix (the ph in phdisk)? Is there an option for this in the bios (the hibernation partition stuff is disableable from there usu.)
-
Hi m8, its a satelite pro 4600 Part Number: PS460E-00GV1-EN.
I used fdisk to partition it into 2 drives, (yes they r FAT32) and it ALL works fine with the 2 partitions until i restore driveC from ghost image i made with or w/out formating it first.
BTW, the thing about the special partiton was just sumut at the bottom of this http://discussions.virtualdr.com/For...ML/038805.html post i found while searching, i have no idea wether it is true in my case or not.
i am unable to find the BIOS on the laptop, i have tried delete and f1 etc,... but it does have a program which is in the windows/command folder, called TSETUP which is basically the same as BIOS to look at and has simular settings (it has BOOT MODE=(BOOT/RESUME(set to BOOT as when from factory))) https://discussions.virtualdr.com/. but i dont think thats anything to do with with the problem.
BTW i've never heard of phdisk...never needed it b4.
Thanx for any Info. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

I'll probably come back to this later tonite I'm a bit busy at the moment but if it's 98SE that you're installing it may need a bios upgrade first - there's a matrix for it I'll post later if you reeply that it's SE.
For a start you can start grabbing stuff (including the Hibernation file make utility) from http://www.toshiba.ca/my_html/suppor...o/sp4600en.htm
-
yes it is 98SE i've installed from the Toshibe Recovery CD that came with it.
Thanx for the help, i'm off to bed now, back in the morning after trying the Hibernation file make utility as this sounds like just what it needs. i'll let u know.
regards, most appreciated.

Have you tried this keystroke sequence on the boot to lose invalid hibernate info? http://www.toshiba.ca/support/Tsbs/600/TSB0677.htm
Are toshiba's power utilities from the url I gave in a previous post installed? What is the bios version on it?

Hi, Thanx IMM for the info... when i run the TSETUP program in DOS it says its ACPI BIOS v.2.40 which is the same as the new version on the link u gave me (i guess that the TSETUP Util is Toshiba's type of BIOS)
I also tried the Holding in BackSpace while turning PC on and it had no effect wat-so-ever other than rapid beeping if i continued to hold it in.
the original toshiba power utilities r installed but i have noticed that they r a slightly older version 2 what is on that link u sent me. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Update: since trying the hibernation file maker util when i click hibernate the monitor turns off and there is some disk activty, but when i try to awake it, it doesn't respond at all...so i have to hold in the power key to reset the thing. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ (i may have to restore backup to fix this, not a problem)
I shall try some of the updates on that link and get back to u with the results.

most apprecated for the help so far IMM.
this is where ive got so far... i've tried all the following updates from your link:
Toshiba Utilities Common Modules
Toshiba Power Saver
Toshiba Utilities
Toshiba Mobile Extentions
Hibernation Utility (from toshiba recovery CD)
none of these fixed the hibernation feature.
i have no idea what the problem is, i have never had the hibernate feature b4 and ghost has always been reliable...
...hopefully someone who uses norton ghost on a PC with the Hibernate feature could tell me wether it still works on their PC?
Thanx again... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

am i on my own with this 1? These sorts of problems are really anoying to diagnose, i've given it all i got https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ so i ask u guys for ur help. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Well I was kinda hoping someone who knows what they're talking about might come along. The DOS executable halloc.exe that the site offers to delete and make hibernation files is one I'm not familiar with (or this laptop - or your version of ghost for that matter) but can you confirm that the file it creates is called toshiber.dat?
A version 5.1 ghost doc notes that some partition-like or hibernation files aren't backed up (even w/o a skip switch).
-----------------
In addition to files skipped using the -skip switch, some temporary files are not
included when cloning a FAT volume. These include SWAPPER.DAT,
WIN386.SWP, SPART.PAR, PAGEFILE.SYS, HYBERN8, 386SPART.PAR,
GHOST.DTA, and DOS DATA SF.
-------------
Is your stuff among this or do you have a different list with the your ghost docs?
It may be that the hibernation file should be specified with a -skip switch in your case?
The PCI devices are probably messed up some by now. What's it look like for multiple entries in device manager from SAFE mode?
[This message has been edited by IMM (edited 06-13-2001).]
-
i booted to safe mode and had a look in the device manager and other than 4 plug n play monitors everything else is pretty normal (it has built-in LCD + TV-Out + Monitor out maybe thas y so many plug n play monitors)
add yes i am using Ghost v5.1
the file toshiber.dat is in the root dir of the c drive and ocording the the setup.bat file this is put there during the setup.bat routine and the halloc.exe is in the windows dir....possibly i am guessing...
SETUP.BAT...
copy /y halloc.exe c:\windows
if exist c:\toshiber.dat c:\windows\halloc.exe /rall
echo. >>c:\autoexec.bat
echo if not exist c:\toshiber.dat c:\windows\halloc.exe /c >>c:\autoexec.bat
echo.
echo ------------------------------------
echo Setup finished.
echo Please reboot your computer!
echo ------------------------------------
from looking at this i shall try deleting the halloc and toshiber.dat the try the update.
thanx for the info i shall be looking into the rest of ur info now and i'll get back
in the mean time there must be someone else that knows the ins and outs of hibernation and what makes it tick.
Thanx again https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

i tried several combinations of deleting the halloc.exe and toshiber.dat the trying the update "Toshiba Hibernation file maker utility".
...and basically found that all that was needed was to delete the toshiber.dat file and reboot...on reboot it would say creating file and hibernation would work fine. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
So all in all this is a good thing as now i can use a -skip switch to skip the toshiber.dat file which is 147mb in size and make the backing-up/restoring quicker/smaller https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Thanx IMM for the insperation and promps, without u i wouldn't have fixed it this quick. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

I think there's a switch in halloc (try halloc /? for info) which deletes hibernation files. Would it not delete the existing .dat file?
BTW - I like it when the system you have is someting I know nothing about and it works out https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
-
yeah i thought it should have deleted and recreated that .DAT file too, but, no it never - i checked, i tried the /? and various usual others and couldn't find and command line switches fir it,
...but never mind, this will be a better way to do it if the backups still work after ignoring the .DAT file during the process...i cant see ant reason y not myself, then i shall save a bit of backup space !BONUS!.
