Transfer files and settings from a corrupted windows 7 HDD to a fresh install

Hello everyone

Basic situation is stormy weather has fried a motherboard (AMD) which had a hdd with win 7 Pro O/S installed.

I have plugged this hdd into another PC and copied all I could from it to an external.

The hdd has now been installed into and intel based system and will attempt to boot, but fails to do so, presumably due to to the O/S having been originally installed on the AMD based system. I have tried the repair function and even sysrestore to no avail.

Is there an easy way to transfer the main files from My Docs/desktop etc to a fresh install using the original hdd slaved?

Yes, simply drag & drop in Windows Explorer.

I guess I was hoping for a more "automatic" way of doing things, especially for favourites and bookmarks etc!

You're welcome.

Simply drag the contents of the old Favorites folder and drop them into the new Favorites folder. Now do the same with the Desktop, Pictures, Music, Documents, etc. and you're done.

You do realise that moving home is one of the most stressful things in life? :p

I was struggling with firefox bookmarks... then I found out where they were kept!

Found that simply copying the user/profile as a whole from the slave to the newly created profile done it all in one go, including the firefox bookmarks.

Even got the same desktop background image as well (without having to set it).

So far so good : party time/beer smiley :
